off-topic but what job are you looking for with your degree?

I'm just finished first year English and I absolutely loved it!!!! Originally I intended on studying English for first year only but now I'm keeping it on for the rest of my degree. You study a wide range of topics like renaissance and modern poetry, drama, fiction, middle English, Old English and Critical Analysis. There are some fairly horrible sections like Old English but overall I found it really interesting! I hope this helps a little!!

Be prepared to have to listen to half your lectures as podcasts

don't know what job I want to do... i'm totally all over the place about next year:confused:... i was originally thinking computer science, loadsa jobs from it... but i'm not sure i'd like it as much as i thought anymore...
I've recently started thinking english again coz it was my favourite subject in school... but i don't know if i should do something like that because i don't wanna be a teacher..

just mentioned because the two big job areas, teaching and civil service, are pretty much closed to new applicants.
now it might be a different story in 4 years time but always good to think ahead.

i did IT in college but it was easy for me because i have an interest and i enjoy it but it isn't for everyone.

but you do go to college to get into a job so doing English cause you like it but having little chance of job is bit of a risk.

yeah.... that's what I was thinking... I like the idea of computer science and stuff... but I think all the study for the leaving cert has killed for me a bit.... I'll think more about it once i've cleared my head... thanks for the advice though:)

it helps if you have an interest in computers before hand. we had some people that weren't and they just stuck to the end to get the degree.

is the cao not finalised yet?

I like computers... but I don't know if I have enough interest in solving problems and such like which is important for the course apparently...

nope, last changes can be made for 1st of July! I had it all decided until i started worrying about 2/3 weeks ago! i'm also an incredibly bad person for making decisions!

yeah solving problems and logical thinking is big part of it.
we had a business aspect in each year but i hated that part :D
we also had a semester of german and one of law so was a bit of everything.
programming is usually the big subject, and it'll be in every year.

what d'you mean? as in they're never there or....?

german would be a doss... but business would be horrible! I really wanna do the webdesign/ multimedia part....

As in.. the class is too large and there isn't room for everyone in the lecture halls so this year only half the class was allowed attend each lecture (you attended 3 lectures one week and two the following on a rota) and the lectures were podcasted so you had to listen to the ones you couldn't attend online.

you're kidding?? that's ridiculous.... so they just let everyone into the course..... I really don't want to have to do that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,181 ✭✭✭ronkmonster

how about a multimedia course then

still have to do the basics of computing and still do programming
but more a focus on creativity. more web design. we only did basics

Before I decided to English, I looked into doing Multimedia. As far as I know, there's a multimedia degree in CIT. It's a Bachelor of Arts degree too so it wouldn't be all problem solving like computer science.

do you know what subjects are in the course?
