Payroll rates

Does anyone know what I should expect to pay a payroll bureau/book-keeping service to send someone out to process my payroll in my office for 5-6 hrs per month using my software and equipment?
What would be a fair hourly rate in the Dublin area?

Think of it as employing a part time employee with particular expertise.

A rate of €15 - €20 an hour would be a minimum rate for someone who is properly qualified, but you can expect to pay more if that person is employed by a bureau service.

However, don't confuse experience with qualifications. There are a lot of people out there processing payroll who have no payroll qualifications and are dependant soley on payroll software, which simply isn't good enough.

Payroll is too complicated these days to leave it to someone without qualifications.

    Hi ladybird

Can you give us a bit more info e.g.:

    - are employees weekly or monthly paid?
    - fixed or variable salary payments?
    - number of employees?
    - any other elements to payroll e.g. pensions, biks etc?

    Thanks

Hi there. You should also consider some of the guys who do this work remotely. I gather it is cheaper and frees up your office. No harm looking into it.

Rates in my experience in south east are from 20 to 35 euros per hour. These may of fallen in the past year though

If you're in the city centre it should cost 25-35 per hour dependant on experience. The only annoy thing is if you have any queries about the payroll when they're not there you'll be charged additional time.

You should also weigh up the cost of the software, payslips and time that you spend following up queries during the rest of the month (mortgage forms, employee pay queries, P60 reprints, P45s etc). Also look at the cost of outsouring the whole payroll as, depending on the number of employees, it can often work out cheaper and some companies like www.a1payroll.ie do free trials so you can run it alongside your existing payroll service.

Either way, there's never been a better time to get a good deal so if you get someone in just make sure they can do the job, are not just an individual (otherwise you have to worry about their holidays as well!), and haggle on price.
