Whats the engineers responsibility in house build ?

    Hello everyone,

I built a house by direct labour.I hired an engineer to draw up plans and overlook the build of the house for stage payment certification requested by mortgage provider.

Concrete barges were built on either end over the gables and roofed into.
They cracked and let water into the house. The engineer had a meeting with the roofers before it was built.
I have since learned that no steel or lead was put into the barge.Lead was mentioned on the builders plan but no steel.
I think there should have been a spec similar to the foundation to guide the builders.

The roofers have repaired the barge but the engineer claims no responsibility blaming it all on the roofers.

Any opinions please. (this is only a brief account)

looks like the engineers responsibility was to issue instructions - which it appears he did

going direct labour implies that you are in effect the main contractor - as such it is your responsibility to follow those instructions and ensure they are implemented on site . no one else

it seems the problem has been sorted on site - so happy days ?

    Thanks for your reply,

This is where i am stumped..What am I paying the engineer for.
I taught he is suppose to make sure everything is built correctly.
Why bother having a meeting with the roofers before building if thats the way.

plans specifications and instructions issued by any construction professional are prepared for execution by "the builder"

"the builder" is responsible for carrying them - no one else

if you self build - you are "the builder"

you paid the engineer i assume for the services he provided . documentation and site visits to draw down funds

if he also gave instructions to anyone and they did not follow them - "the builder" is responsible

now you have said the problem is sorted . what issue remains ?
