Kung Fu to lose weight

    Hey. I'm quite a large bloke (18.5 stone) and have recently started a programme to lose weight, including diet, going to the gym 4 times a week, and possibly taking up a bit of cycling soon too. I've always wanted to take up a martial art such as kung fu, kickboxing or tae kwon do.

    Like I said, I'm a large guy and not very flexible. Would it be worth my while joining a martial arts club to help me lose weight (in addition to what I've mentioned above) or would I be better losing most of the weight first. One way or another, I hope to eventually take it up, but I'm just worried that being so out of shape will almost bring the rest of the class down, or that I won't be able to keep up or do the simplest tasks. Plus, if its not going to help me lose weight too much then I might be better off doing an extra session at the gym.

    Dont worry bout the rest of the class or what you can or cant do, get in there and enjoy yourself. Your probably going to get pretty fed up with the gym if you are doing it 4 times a week. Flexibility like anything else, is something that you get better at with practice.

    I can't add much to what Dunkamania has said, except to suggest that you look around at what other styles are available in your area.

    I'm not suggesting that Kung Fu isn't any good, but its always a good idea to see what else is in your area before jumping in.

    Don't be worrying about bringing the rest of the class down. Get in there. Do what you want to do. Most people walking through the doors for the first time are unfit and overweight anyway.

    Get in there, work at your own pace and enjoy it

    Set yourself goals and do you uptmost to acheive them

    If you are serious about losing weight cut back on the carbs, eat more meat and greens, get a good quality fish oil with EPA DHA (good fats kill the craving for bad fats) and drink gallons of water

    Main thing about training is finding something you enjoy. You aren't going to stick to the gym if you don't like it and the same goes for the martial art

    I have lost about 4 stone since taking up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu 6 months ago and cutting out eating crap at the same time, I still don't eat as healthily as I should but cutting out all the sugars and junk food and my 2 litres of milk i used to drink daily has had a huge affect. I don't do any other exercise apart from the BJJ 3 nights a week but it i still getting the job done.

    I put off doing it for years as I thought i was too unfit but I could not have been more wrong, at first yeah i could hardly do any of the basic movements that required flexibility at all but it keeps getting better which each month and I am enjoying it so much I wish I got the courage to start it years ago. I could never keep going to a gym as it was so boring, find a martial art you will enjoy so you will actually stick with it.
