Preserving for silage

How long is recommended to leave meadows after N application before they can be cut as (pit) silage? Have slurry out on silage ground since late April but only recently was it dry enough to shake fertilizer (2 bags per acre). Normally I'd leave it 8+ weeks but as I need the ground is it safe to shave that time by a week or two?

2 units a day is used up, spread 60 units roughly 30 days.

i think you can bring a handful of the grass to your teagasc office and they can send it to get it tested... but with all the rain we have had it should be ok

    As above, 60 units = 30 days.

You can cut before this so long as you are wilting the silage before you put it in the pit. Every day wilting will remove 10 units of N.

I put 90 units of N on a field on 10th of May. At the time the field had little growth after a poor April. I knew it was late applying it. But i did not expect May to come so good. I checked it this evening and after the weather we have just had the meadow is falling over itself. I would love to bale it for silage on the next couple of dry days we get.

Assuming the sunshine appears again, how long would you wait?

You should usually wait about 6 weeks minimum but you can apply certain additives that can prevent the nitrogen being a problem agri king being one that comes to mind works out very expensive though for bale silage used it a few years ago for the same problem worked well though but who ever does your baling would have to have a powder applicator to apply the powder having read your post again cut it down and turn it a couple of times to wilt it as much as possible other wise additive is your best bet

OP when exactly did you spread the fertiliser?

The reason I ask is normally 2 units per day is removed, but this year growth was so poor in early May that the N was probably not taken up as fast by grass. The good growth rates only started around the 24th of May.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

I spread it on the 10th of May.
What sort of sample do the teagasc office require? How many samples should I take?

    Thanks for the replies.
