The unemployment crisis dramatically worsened last month with more than 400,000 people now seeking state benefits.

Official figures today revealed the numbers signing-on almost doubled in the last year with the unemployment rate now 11.8%.

The Central Statistics Office said more than twice as many men as women are on the Live Register

I remember when it was 16% 13,500 added in May.

It's hardly an unexpected figure. Lots of the announced redundancies are still being phased in over the course of the year and the lack of seasonal work will make the seasonally adjusted figures much worse over the Summer.

Don't forget the 70,000 bright young things finishing 3rd level this month :p
