IR blaster issue

So, i got my ntl stb working with mce (finally) but im now having huge problems trying to get the windows remote set up. I thought it was originally due to my antec cases buit in receiver but ive got that sorted and the issue appears to be with the mce ir blaster. Having tracked down exactly where the receiver is , I attached it to the front of the stb, but only got very intermittent results. I moved it around the area and at one point had it working consistently but it appears to need to be so accurately placed that by the time ive reached for the cellotape, ive lost it (and ive tried again many many times).. I know it needs to be placed correctly but surely not to within a fraction of a millimeter!?! a couple of things, has anyone else had this problem? should i be using both blasters? im using a tv card that doesnt have the required hardware encodeing so im using a sw workaround, could this be anything to do with it?
the stb remote works with the box perfectly so i dont think the problem is there, any ideas anyone has would be hugely appreciated..... thanks

When you go through the setup TV wizard in MC, once it has identifed your STB, it will ask you to change the channel. And will display the word fast somewhere. Well you dont want fast, so select No and then No again as you want it to be slow. This can be done via the registry too if you don't want to go through the wizard again. "Bing it :)" for details.

It shouldnt be that sensitive to where the transmitter is taped. Mine is about an inch away from the green light on my STB.

Yeah its identifying the stb remote fine, its the next stage where you put in the three digits to change the channel that the problem is.. i just cant get it to consistently change channel, i think ive tried skipping this stage and changing the speed with no luck though i might have another look at this.. the proximity to the reciever appears at least to be the issue because as i say, it was working at one point.. by making tiny adjusments to the position... incredibly frustrating!

I have two separate NTL Pace STBs hooked up to two different media centre machines. I've had to use the medium speed setting to get channel-changing to work consistently. In both cases, I've sellotaped the IRBlaster about an inch to the left of the card slot, roughly in the middle of the STB, and they work fine (and the NTL remotes still work properly, so the signal isn't getting blocked. If you shine a torch on the PACE box, you'll see the outline of the sensor you need to cover.
