How lenient are they about fee payments??

I think I'm going to get hit with the full whack this year because I am repeating a year and could have to repeat the whole year since its in a new college (I am transfering).

I have got 237 euro to my name right now. Planning on getting a job and saving my ass off, I live at home so its not too bad. But it's looking like I'm getting hit with 7,000 in fees (give or take).

Could I make a payment plan that would give me some leniency? Like how flexible are they with that?

I'm planning on going to NUI Maynooth this year for the 09/10 year. I don't think I qualify as a second chance student because my last year of college was the 04/05 year (which I failed). You need to have been away for 5 years to qualify as a second chance student but by my calculations it's going to be 4 years since I am returning (05 - 09), although I might try to make a case for it being 5 years and see what they say. maybe they calculate it from the starting year which would be 04-09, which would classify me for the maintainance grant. I think I have a chance there. Doubtful though. My friends are advising my to take another year off if I don't qualify as a second chance student and then go back when i do qualify but I'm desperate to get back into college and get my degree and if it means working my ass off all the way through and going on the student diet (lots of tins of tuna!), i guess that will have to happen!

    Thoughts?

    Hello there!

I am also going to start college AGAIN this year ( its really annoying starting over, isnt it!)

So your choice is either waiting a year to go back and qualifying for back to education, or getting it started asap! Im in your exact same situation!

The thing is, im getting a loan off my father and getting a loan off the credit union, i just signed onto the dole so i will be recieving it for the rest of the summer, and as well as that , i am going to find the dirtiest cheapest house to live in next year and give up anything unnecessary to eat - sweets, chocolate and also possibly giving up drink (yikes! but it might have to be done)

But Im only going to have to do that for the 1st year. If you have to do that for 2 or more years im not sure you should go back to college. If you wait the extra year you will have no money problems for the rest of your college days!

So ask yourself if you can really really hold up financially. if you can- i say go for it. i couldnt bear waiting the extra year!!

But if you cant..then id say wait the extra year. your college work will fare badly if you're malnourished and constantly plagued with money worries!! :(

talk to your parents or family members about a loan, sign onto the dole if you cant find a job, and stop spending money, and talk to your local credit union!!

Seems like I'm in the same boat as yourself, though I should be ok for the BTEA. Whereabouts is this credit union you got the loan from? :P

I've been in NUIM for four years. They are very friendly and helpful across the beard. If there is anything they can do for you they will. You could maybe ring the "academic advisory office" -they'll put you through from the switch, and they might at least have some info or contacts for you
