Icons on desktop

    Hi all,

    total mac noob here, got the mac book this week and have installed a few programmes, well skype and firefox,

    How do i get rid of the icons after they are installed, i have them added to the bottom of the screen but just don't like having icons on my desktop...

    What icons? You mean the installer apps? You can just drag them straight to the trash. To avoid icons on the Desktop you should have everything download to the Downloads folder which is easily accessible from the Dock. This is where they should go by default.

    Or are the icons aliases/shortcuts?

    I tried dragging them to trash but it says drive cannot be ejected... They are apps i've downloaded.

    It's a disk image. It's just a package for installing apps. Dragging them to the trash should eject them. However I assume you are mistakenly running the app from within the disk image which is why it won't eject.

    Do this:

    - Quit the app
    - Open the disk image
    - Drag the app inside to the Applications folder (this copies it over)
    - Then eject the disk image (by dragging it to the trash or right clicking and eject)
    - Then go to the Applications folder and open the app, add to the Dock, etc.
