What is "one" PRSI contribution ?

Maybe this is a daft question (sorry!), but what exactly is one prsi contribution ?

I get paid monthly, and hence get deducted for prsi monthly... is this one contribution ?

I only ask because i visited the dentist last week and found out that my checkup was covered by prsi (nice surprise!)... but i wondered why i have not received previous checkups at the same dentist under prsi as i have been paying it for 4 years... after searching online it turns out i need 39 stamps to get the benefit...

4 years is 48 payslips for me so maybe that explains it... but does that mean that somebody who is paid weekly/fortnightly makes more contributions ??

You get one PRSI contribution/stamp for each week you work, regardless of whether you are paid monthly or not. If you have worked full time for the past year or more, you will have 52 per year. Last year's P60 will show how many stamps/prsi contributions you paid for that year.

Also, I think Dental Benefit is only paid for an 'A' class contribution. The type of class of contribution you pay will also be noted on your P60. Hope this helps :)

You must be paying Class A, E, P or H PRSI

If you are under 25 you need 39 weeks of payments
If you are over 25 you need 260 weeks of payments

Edited to say - if you think you should qualify, double check with social welfare why you aren't. When that happened to me social welfare were 'missing' 2 years of my P60s and so weren't counting those contributions.
