You'll often have the Blues at the back... used in main competitions. Sometimes called the Championship Tees.
Whites next for the regular mens tees.
Greens would be for society tees and not much used.
    Reds for women.

Sometimes clubs will have Junior tees too... maybe yellow markers.
5n winter you'd tend to play off the whites and sometimes these can be moved forward to where the green markers usually are depending on conditions. This time of year I like to play off the back markers bur if you are not in competition you can play off wherever you like I guess :)

actually you can only play of the blue/comp tess if you are in a competition (or are a pro) at least in my club,

Some places don't take to kindly if you are playing from the stones and not the markers cause you can damage the tee-box.

That what I was told by someone when I said I was practicing from the back tee's.

We have only Green's and Whites in our course and during the week the whites can be a a bit forward. I don't like it cause you don't get to learn the course for when playing comps

Competitions are a mixture of blues and whites in my club. Blues are always used for inter-club so we try and play competitions off them when possible. Sometimes conditions don't allow though because it would be a slog off the back but this time of year the whites are too short really. If I was playing a practice round I'd always try and play from the back but I understand that some clubs don't allow this which is fine too.

Pretty sure the yellows at St Margaret's are the tees third from the back. I guess that would mean they are society/practice tees.

Remember that you can tee it up anywhere up to 2 clublengths back from the markers, useful for getting a Pro-like feeling or when you are between clubs on a par3.

Interesting what you say about the green markers being society tees. In my home club, Wicklow, unless your playing in a competition you must play off the green tees. Whites are usually used for the Thursday competition, with the Sunday competition being played from the blue markers.

One thing I've noticed on some holes playing off the blue markers or the green markers makes very little difference, maybe an extra club or maybe 2 on your approach shot. But on other holes it can change the hole completely! The example in our club being the 6th. Off the whites or greens its a relatively simple par 4, the 8 fairway runs parallel to the 6th so plenty of space to aim at. However from the blue's you play from the "nose", a small headland jutting out into the Irish sea. It now becomes a risk reward hole, how much of the water do you take on? Usually off the greens/whites its a driver and a 6iron - wedge (depending on wind). From the blues its driver and 3 or 5 wood, massive difference!

Does anyone else notice this as well?

    Regards
    Ian
