    Folks,

Just looking to get some input on a good radio to purchase and where.

Nothing too expensive. Just want to make sure that it is compatible.

    Really appreciate it.

    Cheers:)

I recommend the Motorola XTR446's. I picked up a set on eBay for about €65 awhile back!

And as long as its on the 446 band it'll be compatible.

PMR446 is a licence free frequency range used in most European countries. Most walkie talkies that can be purchased for personal use, uses this standard.

As Dread-Lock said the Motorola XTN446's are great. The Motorola XTNiD is the replacement for the XTN446, Its also a good comm, though I have heard people on boards complain about how hard it is to figure out initially.

I just got myself a pair of Motorola Tlkr T7. The Tlkr T5 is pretty much the same thing, with a slightly reduced range, and greatly reduced cost. I haven't received the units yet, but they are supposed to be decent enough.

If you really want to keep the cost down. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the walkie talkies that show up in Lidl for 20-30 euro. They are compatible with all the comm's being used on skirmish sites.

A decent head set is probably more important than the walkie talkie itself.

Why in tarnation do they come in packs of two?

Here's a related query - I'm going to be wanting a headset, but am deaf in one ear (a situation not without its benefits, as it happens), so I'll be needing something that doesn't block out real-life sound, so no in-the-ear stuff or anything that encases the ear. I suppose something that's a speaker sitting about a centimetre from my ear would be ideal - there'd be some noise leakage but that's something I'll have to deal with. Anyone got any suggestions on headsets that don't hamper an ear's ability to do ear things?

Something like this cavalvy might be suitable.

    Cheers Lads.

Price suits perfectly and cheers Pornstar for the explanation.

Think I'll go for the Motorollas then.

Next is the ear piece and mic.

Do you think that a throat mic is worth it or something along the lines of what cavalvy have?

It might, at that. Any experience with them? Happen to know if the mic is reversible? (the mannequin there is wearing it on the left, but that's exactly zero use to me :) )

With throat mics, you either spend 100 euro, or get a piece of ****. Id like to get one myself, but I don't have the money to commit to it right now.

A lot of people here have got either this or this headset from ehobby, and are happy with the purchase. The reviews posted for each item will tell you a lot about the quality of them, so have a look through them and decide for yourself.

Whatever you decide to get, just make sure you are getting the right connector for the radio you purchased. The Motorola talkabout or 1 pin connector seems to be the most common for most commercial walkie talkies.

Ah feck. Doesn't look reversible to me at all. You would have to do a chop job.

Maybe these would be better. I'm not entirely sure how, but they amplify the sound around you. I know some people on boards have got themselves a pair, maybe one of them can chime in.

    RE: Throat Mics

I bought a throat mic off boards here for 50 quid, great buy. As far as blocking out sound, its like walking around with one ipod headphone in, so depending on the volume level you can hear a reasonable amount of your surroundings.

Also, throat mics are more suited to those with thinner necks as the mics can pick it up better and transmit a better quality sound.

To resurrect an old thread rather than create a new one...

-PornStar- said that the 1pin connector seems to be the most common used.
Can anyone confirm that this is still the case ?

    Is the "single connector" a 2.5mm connector, and the "double connector" a 2.5mm and a 3.5mm ?

Also can anyone confirm whether the following comms have a single connector or a dual
    1) Motorola TLKR T7, (i think has single)
    2) Motorola XTR446, (i think has single) and the
    3) Motorola XTNID (i think has double)

Actually... also has anyone had any experience between these and can recommend one ?

    1) Motorola TLKR T7, (i think has single) Correct
    2) Motorola XTR446, (i think has single). Correct
    3) Motorola XTNID (i think has double). Correct

myself and a few of the guys in MAC us the t7's and they are perfect for airsoft over here. Sound quality is crystle clear, great range in a large woodland site and cheap enough price for a pair. I don't have the link to hand but if you search eBay there is a company in the uk that sell them for about €70 couriered to your door. If you want something better than the T7 then I'd say skip the xtr and go for the xtnid (get the desplay version).

As for the moto single pin being the standard I'm not sure, I have a pair of binetone radios that use a shorter pin (by about 2 mm) than moto use.

does anybody know if you can get adaptors for the binatone radios so you can fit proper headsets into it thinking about getting a set thats on sale here for 60 euro

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 304 ✭✭Solid Snake

    Hey Snakedoc,

One of my mates got his adapters in Maplin.

Seems to have to have sorted the problem.
Just take the radio with you and see if it works.

You can get an ICOM two pin to binetone one pin adapter (I have one for my headset) but you can't get a moto to binetone adapter apparently. Your best bet is to go into a radio shop (there's a few in Dublin) and get the low down on what brand headsets are comparable with an adapter then buy online where it's cheaper.:)
