PS3 not reading discs - what to do

Im going to share my recent experience with you.

Blu ray drive died over the weekend on a 60gig ps3 bought in November 07. I called soy who wanted 160 yo yo’s to replace the part. I declined their ‘kind’ offer.

Under sale of goods and supply of services act, you are covered for if the item purchased is not fit for the purpose intended and it is reasonable to assume that a €500 piece if kit should last longer than 18 months. We are also covered under EU law where consumers are given a 2 year warranty on electrical item.

With this in mind I called the shop where ps3 was purchased who originally fobbed me off saying that I am not covered outside of manufacturers 1 year warranty. I said to her that is warranty is on top of my legal rights. She said that she will check it out for me and call me back. Before she hung up I made her aware that if her reply wasn’t favourable, then I will take issue to small claims court if necessary.

I got a call back 20 mins later saying that they will replace the unit with a brand new 80gig model.

p.s. I didn’t have shop receipt, only copy of credit card statement. If possible, pay by cc or laser in case you lose your original shop receipt.

I gleaned a lot of info from a few thread on consumer issues forum, especially this thread……… http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055574148

There's no need for everything to be in bold. Thanks.

Are you sure you want to be rid of a 60GB PS3? Seeing as it has PS2 backwards compatability and the 80GB PS3s do not?

What you should try is a full format of your hard drive on your PS3 before you do anything else. My PS3 stopped playing BluRay discs (but would play DVDs and CDs) last October. A full format fixed my problem and my PS3 has been working with no problems ever since. Apparently hard drive corruption can cause problems playing discs. There is no guarantee a full format will solve your problem but it is worth a try to save yourself any other hassle. Be sure to do a full back up though beforehand :pac:

thanks goth, yeah i already did a full format and everything is backed up on my ipod. i did a bit of reasearch into the issue and tried a few possible solutions and none worked.

i dont mind about the ps2 compatability, i still have an old ps2 knocking about if i get the urge.

Right so, best of luck with the new one. Good to hear you got it sorted, that's some good advice for anybody else who is unfortunate enough to have this happen to them.
