    Folks,
Basically I want to register a .ie name but am unable to do so as you have to set up a business. Baically I am not in a position to set up business yet but I want to protect my business name. Can I register it as a trademark and then use this protection to register the .ie name. When this is done would I then need to register with CRO? Please note that the legal structure will be that of a sole trader.
I did read the thread regarding CRO but it doesnt really answer my question.

Thanks in advance for your help!!

All you need to do is register the business name with the cro. If you do it online its €20 and usually takes two weeks to get the form. But you will get a receipt which you can use to buy the .ie domain name. PM me if you need any further help

Yes, you have to have registered the business name first
Baically I am not in a position to set up business yet
Registration of business name is just showing CRO your intent to use that business name. Starting trading is a different matter and you would inform revenue on a TR1 form whenever that time comes.
but I want to protect my business name
Registering it as a business name wont' protect it. It won't stop anyone else registering is as a business name or as a limited company. As per CRO website, there is no restriction on the amount of people that can register the same business name.
Can I register it as a trademark
You could but that would be very expensive to do. You'll find details on trademarks on www.patentsoffice.ie
and then use this protection to register the .ie name.
If you register the business name, you won't need the trademark to register the domain
When this is done would I then need to register with CRO?
Whenever you want and you can register the business name for a sole trader by filling out an RBN1 form from here

You should try having a look at this

If you do it online its €20 and usually takes two weeks to get the form.
Two weeks is now gone to 6 weeks as there is a backlog
But you will get a receipt which you can use to buy the .ie domain name.
Yep. Easiest way to do it.

    Many thanks for your help!!
I will register with CRO and then I'm going to register it as a trademark to prevent others from using it total cost roughly €300...not bad..

    Try 8 - 12 weeks!

If I register with CRO and have not yet commenced trading for a year or two do I still need to file returns with them?

    Hi Fragle

You said you are going to trade as a sole trader.

You do not file any returns with the CRO if you are a sole trader only if you are a company.

If you register a business name then that is all that it is. There is no ongoing returns to be filed with CRO for this.

But when you begin to trade you will need to file tax returns with revenue.

There are a number of ways you can register a .ie domain for your venture, using the RBN application category by registering a business name with the CRO is one of the easiest ways to get the IEDR to accept your application but they will also accept other alternative methods for the discretionary application category, please see the IEDR domain name policy for further details

Thats right for a manual application, but for online applications done through CORE, it takes approx 6 weeks. I submit numerous business names every week for clients and thats the offical timeframe at the moment

Does one have to wait for that 6 weeks before legally able to use the registered business name in any capacity for trading? Is it basically approval you are waiting on or is that granted once you register it online and pay the fee?
