Mallet or blade?

So which type of putter do you prefer?

Do you go for the mallet style such as this Odyssey 2-Ball

    2ball.jpg

Or do you prefer a blade like this Ping Anser?

I've always favoured a mallet in the past, but I've felt like a change so I just got myself a new Ping Zing.

What do you think the advantages are of a mallet vs a blade? I've heard people say they prefer blades for faster greens and mallets on slower greeens.

always used blade - from answer for about 15 yrs to currently odyssey tri hot #2. thinking of treating myself to a scotty cameron newport in the near future.

the mallet, being face weighted, suits the pelz style straight stroke and the toe weighted blade suits the 'in to square to in' style stroke.

I used to use the blade (Scotty Cameron) but found it too light and tended to push / pull everything , since changing to a mallet (Ping Crazee) I find the weight of the club with its balance help keep me on my line a lot easier and have never putted better

That said it is tricky to get your pacing on fast greens as you can tend to box them a bit harder, nothing a bit of practice wont sort out, its only pace

I use a mallet, a YES Victoria 2 to be exact. I find blade putters too light for my liking but I love the look of them. Putting is about confidence and for me a mallet workd best. I had an old wilson harmonised mallet which worked well for years until some bugger pinched it.

Here's a good video explaining the difference between the two and the relevance of your putting stroke style as Mag mentioned.

The Yes putters are very, very nice. I've always gone for Ping Anser style putters. Bought one of those Odyssey two-ball things and it last about three weeks... just not for me at all.

I quite like the look of the proper blade style putters like...

They do look fantastic but I imagine they would be near impossible to use. Maybe they wouldn't be, but they look scary.

I use Wilson Deep Red Mallet putter. Mallet FTW.

Have always used the anser. have only ever had 2 putters and both were ansers. Using the anser redwood now wont be changing for a good while!

The anser is a super putter by all accounts. I did have an Odyssey 2ball SRT for a short while but found the face of it too soft and lag putting was a nightmare as a result.....nice from about 10ft and in though. Traded it for the YES victoria and have putted well since.

Bought a Cleveland Classic #2 putter in Mcguirks last week and I love it. Its like the traditional blades but its got a back like a mallet. The weighting keeps me from going off line on my back stroke and im making a lot more shorter putts. The feel is a lot better than my Odessey aswell and its got a lovely spin milled metal face. To be fair, I was damn awful with that Odessey.

These are all the putters I've ever had, in chronological order.

I think out of all of them the Never Compromise was my favourite. I remember putting really well in a tournament in Florida with that one.

I've had a fair mixture of mallets and blades really. Started off with the blade style and then went towards mallets. Just picked up the Ping Zing today so I'm looking forward to seeing how I get on with it.

In the 11 or so years I've been playing golf I've only actually used 2 putters - and the second I only bought last summer!

The old Callaway just sat perfectly on the ground. I may even go back to it someday. But my new Odyssey is really, really nice.

I used a 12 pound (sterling) 30 inch putter for years. It was bought in American golf discount when i was about 12. My brother was getting a whole new set of clubs and my Dad bought me it to keep me happy. Used it til i was about 16 and in temper banged it into the ground toe-first and the head snapped off. After that it's gone...

Nice looking putter Thundercat, I have something vaguely similar myself.

I was having a go of an Odyssey just like that and it came down to that or the Zing. Just liked the way the Zing sat behind the ball.

I've been playing for 17 years so I suppose an average of 2 years per putter isn't too bad. I still have all the old ones in the garage except for the Never Compromise which literally fell apart (the grey bit separated from the rest of the club).

Using a Rife mallet type putter now and was going OK but I played yesterday in Kilkenny and 4 putted the 3rd hole... then on the next I missed my second putt and went to tap in the 3rd and the ball moved on the green so back to back doubles and total fear when putting from in close :)
I put a blade style putter in the boot this morning and tried a few putts at lunchtime but without the weight I'm all over the place with short putts so I'll stick with the Rife.

That's gas because I was torn between the Odyssey and a Ping G10 series like you got! Although the Anser 4 was the one I was looking at.

I'm a mallet man. I'm waiting on a YES victoria to be delivered at the moment, and I cant wait. The girlfriend is just gonna have to accept there is a 2nd woman in my life!

Been using this for the last 12 years (I think) or so. nubb_m8s_med.jpg

Its a really nice putter and I put pretty well with it at times but I feel like a change.
I wont get rid of it though and if it doesnt work out with Val, this'll be straight back into the bag.

My little divil, had it around two years and we've had a few tiffs but all in all we get on grand.

    She's good to me...:D

I used a putter like this from when i was 11 till about 15 (along with a set of wilson blade irons) and a little wooden driver.

I've never been a good driver of the ball, but both the blade putter and the bladed irons, although they were a nightmare to use at times, really improved my putting and ball striking.

So after practising with the new Ping Zing for a couple of hours on Thursday night I played 36 holes on Friday and my putting was decidedly average (i.e. sh*te).

Went back to the old reliable 2-ball today and putted great. Sorry 2-ball please forgive me for ever doubting you, I should have never cheated on you with that Ping Zing.

P.S. Anyone want to buy a nearly new Ping Zing? j/k!
