It was talked about briefly in the E3 thread.

The little boy still looks like a placeholder though. I mean he seems cellshaded and has significantly less detail than the levels and that cat/bird. He also appears to be almost glowing.

I wonder what the meaning of that is?

Is there any news on when this might be out at all?

    L,
Totally agree with your comments especially about the boy....almost cartoony compared to the other detail (of which is magical and breath taking) .
In my opinion it has has to be deliberate but has me wondering why ?

This guy is a genius when it comes to this sort of display , putting the game aside ... i would gladly sit down and watch a full length movie if he made one

    My 2 pence worth

The character in this game looks a cross between the boy from Ico and Yorda (the glowing white clothes)

The music really makes the trailer too, well for me anyway, it's the theme from Miller's Crossing, one of my favourite film scores so that'll always make me like it more! Like whenever a movie has an Eels song in it, it immediately makes the film better for me.

defo agree about the boy, he doesnt have anywhere near the required detail to be the finished product.

    What's with the need for hyper-realism? o_O

    This looks great visually.
I like the strange way the kid stands out "glowing" makes it even more dreamlike.

Well if it plays aswell as ICO it'll be fascinating. Never played shadow. Seems to be some interesting games coming the way of the ps3

    1) Buy a PS2.
    2) Buy SOTC.
    3) Play it.
    4) Thank me after.

There was a fairly big interview with Fumito Ueda in Famitsu this week:

    http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3174577
In The Last Guardian, the player controls the boy seen in the trailer, interacting with the eagle as he explores the game world. Exactly how the boy and eagle meet up is still a secret, but one scene in the trailer seems to show the boy giving the eagle some food. "You can feed the eagle, as well as take out any spears or harpoons stuck in his body," Ueda said. "You're free to interact with him at any time, but having to care for him constantly would be annoying, so we're striking a balance. Building your characters and solving puzzles are important parts of any game, but an animal strikes a presence in your life simply by looking at it. There is an air of mystery to them, since you can't be sure what thoughts could be crossing their mind, and that's another reason why animals are a main theme of the game."
As Ueda put it to Famitsu, the classic Ico/Colossus gameplay -- climbing up, grabbing on to things, figuring out how to get from point A to point B -- will be the main thrust of The Last Guardian as well. "This game, unlike the previous ones, runs on a full physics engine, but it's not just for the purposes of technology," he noted. "I think it's important that any piece of technology you use contributes to the themes you're trying to express. We're very serious about this -- for example, in the scene [in the trailer] where the eagle grabs the barrel and swallows it, that's not simple animation; the barrel makes interactive contact with his mouth, and physical momentum drives it down his throat. We learned a great deal about AI processing in Ico and transformative collisions in Shadow of the Colossus; here, we've put the two together and brought them up to PlayStation 3 level, and that lets us make this world the kind of inviting, 'I wish I could go there' place that Ico and Colossus had."

Sony Computer Entertainment announced at E3 that The Last Guardian is a 2010 release, and Ueda declined to go into further specifics, other than to say "there is definitely a reason why we are announcing this when we are." Online compatibility is still up in the air -- "There are things I'd like to do with the online environment," Ueda said, but "I can't definitely say whether it will happen."

Regarding the boy's visual styling, I kind of figured it was deliberate to make him stand out in the picture.

dunno, its 1 thing to make him glow and stand out but i think he stands out because he is nowhere near as detailed looking as the enviroments or kitty-dragon. its not about realism at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,415 ✭✭✭chupacabra

Have any of ye actually played ICO? If not then i dont believe you have a right to criticize the "glowing" boy...

Yes it's the same overbloom used in ICO and it looked fabulous then and looks just as good now. Not every game has to be realistic. You play games to escape everyday life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,564 ✭✭✭corcaigh07

ok i watched it again and while I notice the glowing more than before, i still think Team ico(japan studios?) could chop and change the hero if they see fit where as the dragon and enviroments look stunning and very detailed and very Final. I believe they can retain the glowing effect while increasing the detail of the hero, again its not about realism, i just think, beside the dragon, the hero looks fairly basic.

...and i played ico and sotc, yorda was unusual but she was always mysterious and didnt look basic graphically to anything else in the game.

I don't think you are understanding me. I'm not commenting on the realism, more the visual polygon count of the world as well as the soldiers and eagle. The boy looks to have considerably less polygons in comparison to every other element in the video.

It's not that I'm noticing that he looks less realistic, its that he looks out of place in the videos. I don't mind that he's glowing or if the game is RL realistic, rather with the game engine used the boy seems to be considerably less developed (which is odd as the exact inverse is usually true)

I also don't have any problems with this, I was merely noticing it.

I've read comments from people that this is likely a metaphor for the boy being in a world where he doesn't belong - this sounds likely to me. I can't see them putting out their big trailer with an unfinished main character, and for me the look is fine.

yeah it will be interesting to see how it is explained in the game itself

They are probably keeping the poly count low as well and adding a glow to disguise it so they can increase detail elsewhere, especially on the creature. I'm team ico are going to push the PS3 further than anyone else has done so far since they have done so with their last two games.

well, the last two games had original enough endings so even if one of the two lead characters has to die, im sure team ico will do in an involving, non-cliche way.

I bet the Griffin thing will fart, accidentally blowing the kid off a cliff, killing him. You'll feel guilty for laughing, and pissed off at the ending, it'll cover a whole range of emotions!

Indeed, looks like they are keeping their high standards in regards to music. I love the tune thats playing in this and the previous trailer.

No not the music from the trailer at the end of the video, I'm talking about from the part with the interview with Fumito Ueda. It sounds like music from the game to me. Godly music.

    Bumpity bump.

This actually carries on from the last post: new trailer released, and if the adorable music doesn't melt your heart, you are not human :pac:

IMO i say wait , better graphics frame rate to 30 per second and trophies , but if you cant wait that long for it i say go for it either way you have the best gaming experience

Theres a connection in all his games clearly people complaining bout the glowing boy have not played the brilliance that was ico! Cant wait for the HD re-issue of ico and shadow for the ps3! Havnt been able to play em since my ps2 went byebye!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,450 ✭✭✭Batesy

I only played Ico and SOTC last year but I'll definitely be buying the HD remakes. They are probably the best 2 games I've played. Highly recommend anyone who hasn't played them to get a copy if the HD remake. You're in for a treat!!!

Oh, can't wait for the Last Guardian!

Here are a few words from The Last Guardian Director/Game Designer, Fumito Ueda:

I announced at last year’s Tokyo Game Show that the release timing of The Last Guardian which is currently being developed would be holiday 2011.

However, to provide more challenging and better quality of content to users and to fulfill First Party Studio’s obligations, I decided to postpone its release timing.

All the members of my production team are working together at a fast pace to develop and release the game in First Party Studio quality.

I sincerely apologize to all the customers who have been waiting for “The Last Guardian” for so long, but I beg for your patience. I will also announce the new release timing at a later time.

+1 SOTC Soundtrack is a regular on my MP3 player.

    1) I wonder if the horned kid was the first of many or was the baby in SOTC at kid in ICO

    2) I wonder if it this is set after ICO or before SOTC (or even in between)
