Handicaps?

Lads I put in the usually 3 card for a handicap and got one off 16, which I’m thinking is a bit low. The three cards were 89, 90 and 108; it’s a par 70 course. Is there any way to query the handicap once it’s given??

If that's the correct handicap than that’s totally grand I just thought I’d start on around 18

When you submit cards for handicapping, they don't take an average of the 3 cards. Mostly it's worked off your best card and any big numbers on that card are reduced down to a double bogey.
16 doesn't seem wrong based on your 89 (+19). Can you remember if you had any treble bogeys or worse in that round?

It’s funny you ask that because I actually remember I had 1 birdie, 6 pars, 2 bogeys and then weird scores like 6 on two par 3’s (lost balls) and an 8 on a par 5 (again lost ball), but yes I did have a fair few high scoring holes. I can be a little wild off the tee! only for the lost balls I could keep my score down

    Seems about right.

If you check out the scores from a clubs weekly competition you will see most people dont play to their handicap (36 points).

The handicap Sec will see you shot 89 and will use that as what score you are capable of.

Throw in the fact that your starting out (getting a new handicap?!) you should be eager and practice/play a lot in the near future.

Its not just about total gross score. If you had 6 pars a birdie and 2 bogies you were fortunate to get 16. If you do a stableford score for your cards off 16 you most likely will be around 34 to 36 points which is what we look for when doing handicaps.
