Hi. I've a mates Acer laptop that i'm trying to get working for him, it's running windows vista home. He thinks that it got dropped.

After a couple of power on/off attempts the laptop booted into vista, I set up a chdsk and rebooted. The laptop crashed half way through chdsk.

Now this is where i'm getting frustrated. 9/10 times I try to turn on I get the power light on the laptop but it i don't get the POST test,
I got it into the BIOS once and set it to boot form cd, stuck in a linux live cd, rebooted but no joy there.

I've resat the Ram, tried with single stick of Ram but makes no difference.

    Any ideas??

Sounds like the hard drive didn't survive the fall.
You can pick up a replacement drive for less than €100, then just re-install the operating system back onto it, but whatever was on the drive in the laptop at the moment is in all likelihood gone, unless you want to speed a few hundred euro to a data recovery agent!

    hi just an update.

I know the HD isin't the problem as it won't boot from a cd and I can only get to the BIOS on random occasions.

I've completely stripped the laptop but couldn't see any obivous problems. I'll stick it back together tonight and see if it'll work after re-sitting everything. Not holding my breath tho.
