Hey. I have a book. Like a serious book. Around 100 pages long. I've had people read through it (not my parents), and they say I should publish it. I have no idea where. Help!

What's the book about? Is it fiction or non-fiction? Aimed at children or adults?

100 pages can mean anything. How many words is it? As a general rule, fiction for adults is around 150,000 words long, and children's fiction starts at abuot 30,000 and goes right up to Harry Potter length.

Nonsense, your average adult orientated thriller will contain anywhere between 70,000 to 100,000 thousand words. A never before published author submitting anything larger than that will find it incredibly difficult to get a deal.

Yup, 80,000-120,000 is more the range for adult fiction - 150,000 is a bit high for a general rule.

Is it for an Irish market? (In which case it may be possible to go to publishers yourself.) Or would you envisage it as having a wider appeal? (In which case you will almost certainly need an agent.)

Writer's Handbook 2010 is out either now or soon - it lists agents and publishers as well as having some general articles. Take a look at some publishers' websites (have a look at any books you've read recently, see who's published them) and agents' websites and see what their requirements are, it might give you some idea about whether what you've written would fit into certain categories.
