Front Derailleur or chainring

Hi everyone need some help here. I have a compact chainset when the chain is in the small sprocket at the back and the small ring up front it makes one hell of a noise. I have to shift up 2 gears for the noise to stop,

I tried looking at the front derailleur and I don't think that is the problem. It seems to be rubbing off the big ring up front .

Any ideas on how to fix this --Thanks

Happens on mine too, its just because of the angle of the chain its rubbing of the large cog at the front. I just dont use these gears and change the front cog up if I want a higher gear ratio.

    Don't cross-chain.
Try to avoid the gears that make the chain cross over at an extreme angle. These "criss-cross" gears are bad for the chain and sprockets. Especially bad is to combine the inside (small) front sprocket with the outside (small) rear sprocket. This noisy, inefficient gear causes the chain to wear out prematurely.

Thanks Lumen, looks like I should be up on the big ring more.

As the guy who's coaching a group of us for a Cork to Dublin cycle in a couple of weeks keeps saying "there shoud be no Z in the chain". You can always get the same result with better choice of gears. I'm sure the experts around here will correct me if I'm wrong but as I understand it if your compact inner chainring is a 39 tooth, and your smallest cog at the back is a 12, thats a ratio of 3.25. So in this example 1 rev of pedals will give 3.25 revs at back wheel. If your big ring at the front is a 52 and you use a 16 tooth at the back (usually around the middle of the block) this also gives a ratio of 3.25 - but no noise - the chain is running straight from front to back.
