tax disc colours

I got into a bit of a debate with a friend of mine about his tax disc.

He had an accident in his work transit in March and the van was a write off. He had reason to go back to collect some belongings from it and decided to whip the tax disc dated until early next year and wandered off.

His car is no longer officially taxed but the disc is a valid one albeit from his former van. No one seems to have missed the disc. He says the van was scrapped.

Obviously he's playing with fire one way or another but I'm convinced that different colours mean different things and that it's possible that at a glance a guard can identify it as being a disc acquired fraudulently.

The reg number printed on it would also be a give away.
Something the Guards are checking an awful lot more.

If the Gardai do a check over the radio if they are following the car(if suspicions raised) it will come back saying the car has no tax and he will be done for having no tax and whatever the technical term for falsifying records is.

He's creating a bigger offense than he would if his tax was out. By using the disc from his van, he's committing fraud - which is something the gards take a very negative view of.

If he owns the work van that was crashed, he could have applied to have the tax refunded as that is possible in certain circumstances i.e. write off.

So if it was his own van he is an awful idiot doing this when he could get a refund and buy the proper disc. If its employers van, he is risking all the fines & penalties of being caught as well as risking his job.
    Gob****e I say.
Gardai are well wise to this too.

    Refunds of motor tax

    It is possible in certain circumstances, to claim a refund of motor tax. Your application for a refund, should be made directly to you local motor tax office, on Form RF120. Circumstances where you may claim a refund of motor tax include;

    * The vehicle has been scrapped/destroyed or sent permanently out of the State,
    * The vehicle has been stolen and has not been recovered by the owner,
    * The vehicle has not been taken out or used in a public place at any time since the issue of the current disc,
    * The owner of the vehicle has ceased, because of illness, injury or other physical disability, to use the vehicle,
    * The owner of the vehicle has ceased, because of absence from the state for business or educational purposes, to use the vehicle,
    * The owner of the vehicle has ceased, because of service overseas with the Defence Forces, to use the vehicle.

Tax discs must be surrendered immediately as refunds are generally calculated from the first of the month following the surrender of the disc. A minimum of three unexpired whole calender months must be left on the disc when surrendered.

No reason in the world to do what he has done and it's a serious crime.

The colour refers to the year of the tax, there isn't different colours for say commercial/private etc.

Just to echo everyone else, if stopped your friend can expect to be in the deep brown stuff. Most traffic cars now have ANPR cameras which will catch him, it's only a matter of time before he drives past one.
He may also lose his job for stealing the tax disc from the company van.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

ANPR should weed out most tax evaders.

I had a garda at the last checkoint read the reg numbers ,etc on the disc.
