Route to accountancy

    Hi
I'm a recent graduate from economics in UCD and am planning on getting into accountancy. Just looking for some advice.

I was thinking of doing the postgrad in accountancy in DIT before looking for a training role as they are fairly sparse at the moment I would imagine. Would people generally recommend this, or would it be better (and less costly) to bypass this and just start applying to firms now? Would most firms look for this on top of a degree before taking you on?

    Thanks

I did economics at UCD too and Im training in a big four at the mo.

Id defo do the diploma if i had my time again. I hadnt got a clue what i was doing when i started and didnt know much about accounting as i was coming from economics. i found the CAP 1 exams hard as i only had 6 weeks off to study for 5 exams and had never done law tax or management accounting before.

It will also give you advantages in the interview process as id say there sick of people failing the cap 1 exams at this stage:D

I would say it depends wot size firm you want to work in.

I trained in a medium sized firm and they took on a few graduates who had non accounting degrees including economics.

Because they got a broader training (ie more exposure to accounts prepartion, tax computations & audit) they generally had no problem with the exams or adapting to accountancy.

And I no friends of mine who have gone into the big four with no accounting background and struggled because they got no practical accs prepartion/tax experience.

Probably different 4 every1 but thats my experience of it
