Hi guys, as some of you know I've taken up cycling to work in the last few weeks and loving it (rest day today and missing it big time)

Just a quick one for you in the know. I've noticed a strange whaling type of noise coming from my back wheel when i pick up speeds over 10kph. Is it just the wind going through the wheel or is there something wrong?

Sorry if this is a silly question it's just that I didn't notice it when starting out.

    Thanks in advance
    Neon

I'm not sure what whaling is meant to sound like, but stuff to check is:

    1. brake pad rubbing against back wheel.
    2. loose spoke on back wheel.

Does it happen both pedalling and freewheeling?

Could be the bearings in the freewheel - I've had this cause noise like a strangled cat.

    Does it sound like this?

Might be time for a new wheel...

Second checking the brakes. My wheel sometimes makes noise if I put a lot of weight on the panniers. It being out of true will also cause this. Had one case where it the tyre was rubbing against the mudguard too.

Even more annoying is I have a noise now that comes from the wheel but only when I stand on the pedals and accelerate making it impossible to figure out when I put the bike on the stand.

thanks for all the replies...even the one with the whale video :D

brake pads etc are not touching the wheel...happens when free wheeling and while on the road. Strange one..

I'll give it a closer look when I get home after work in the CAR

Not sure what whaling sounds like, but I had sometihng similar and it was the bearings in the freewheel

My bike has also decided to wail excessively drawing admiring glances
Can someone confirm how much it would cost to replace the bearings, should i buy the part online and ask the LBS to install it or just drop it into the LBS and hope for the best?

i doubt its your bearings they arnt greased correctley even when new, also id imagine the cones would loosen before you get a whining noise. what bike is it? Its very hard to diagnose a problem without seeing the bike and testing iit.

The wheel makes a loud noise each revolution when pedalling and also when freewheeling, in addition if you lift the bike up you can manually move the rear wheel slightly from side to side even though it is firmly bolted on. It sounds like the problem described in post #6

It's a cheap road bike lookalike

if there is lateral play in the hub, then yes its your bearings.
Take it to a mechanic, the bearings are inexpensive.
Where it can get expensive is if the hub is so badly damaged by the loose hub wearing a ridge into the hub. You will probable have damaged cones, but if you pack it with grease its usually ok.
