Are we too entertained by external applications?

Can you live without your PC/Laptop/Games console?
Do you as early as you can, log on in the day and surf?
Could you stay away from your internet and games for months/for ever?

Is the day of hours glued to the television (for most) finally over?

Microsoft don't think so and are making it harder for that to happen. For example:

Are we too entertained by external applications and no longer able most of the time to entertain ourselves?

    Project Natal?
    FFS.
    What were the other suggestions?
    'Project Douchebag'?

All that kicking and jumping around to control games...

    "you are the controller"

    "use your whole body"

    "full body motion capture"

Jeez I never realised Microsoft hate disabled people so much.

Great stuff - but are we no longer to just be able to sit, chat and have fun without relying also on third party products?

I think its a bit strange...like if your using your whole body why not just do the actual sport?

Would you define a pint as a third party product...

Yes, I personally would. I (or wifey) don't need drink to make us try and be entertaining.
I remember days (and nights) of long power cuts and we were left to amuse ourselves by candle light. Now I'm not saying those "dark" days will return but we quickly found that interaction without the need for outside stimuli was just as good if not better than all the external applications put together.

Things will never be the same and as a group that socially interacts, the ways that which we do so are for ever changing - that can't be avoided - but sometimes I think we are talking one steps forwards and two steps back at the same time.

...maybe I'm just getting old... :(

You could also have gone with:
"I wouldn't mind having that chick entertain MY external application."
    :p

One would have hoped that in the 10 years it took to develope all that error free simultaneous multiuser motion capture and voice recognition technology etc, that we would have gotten to the stage of photorealistic graphics!!

    it will never work.

The skateboard one is hilarious. The kid has spent money on his awesome skateboard yet decides to play it on the xbox instead? Along with a stupid wobble?

Its nuts i tell ya, nuts, skynet will emerge victorious!

I can't wait to see how poorly it actually works. You know it'll be so awkward that people will just use a controller anyway.

Still though, the inevitable law suits will be funny.

I have already played games like this, it's fun. Not too different than the wii. The fact is, kids will play games no matter what. Might as well make it ones where they exercise.

I just close my eyes and I'm in a magical land.

I'm also on lithium and beta-blockers.

They are basically copying Nintendo's strategy. Only difference is you hold a wireless controller in your hand with the Nintendo wii where as they are having no controller.

Trust Microsoft to try and copy someone else. No wonder nintendo are the highest rated against Microsoft and Sony. Their consoles (both regulat and handheld) have outsold the competition by a mile. Safe bet Nintendo will file a copyright law suit :D oh I can't wait :D

Tapping into a market that Nintendo are already masters in is foolish :D

That looks class. One problem is though, I don't think many people live in a house with such an large, open spaced living room. Also, I cant imagine it would work well on a small tv.

Still though, surely by 2019 (after WW3 takes place), the video games market will have moved away from hand held controllers completely.

After seeing how great Totemball worked with the Xbox Live Vision Cam, I'm not holding high hopes for this

Nope. It's basically an updated version of the PS2 EyeToy.

    Important points emboldend.
Notice how they're plural. It's alot easier to find thing for 2 or more people to amuse themselves, or, interact as you put it. Especially when the other person is your SO. Bet you two did alot of interacting by candlelight.
