Dont normally start till september myself but we were targetting newly fledged greycrows yesterday and i spotted a dog fox in the next field just ambling along during the afternoon, he went into to a rushy area and went outta sight, now seeing as my buddy had a flight pond for duck that we had built as a gun club project he wanted him shot, so a couple of lip squeaks had him raise his head over the tops of the rushes and i shot him in the head with the 223 , Fox cubs during summer are a bit too easy for my liking, but there are times when culling is required.

September for me as well, most cattle are in at that time of the year.

It depends, I have the local Reynard population tightened up around me. However if I find any knocking around where the pens are well.......it gets stung by a hornet.

Right was just going to put up a new thread myself and seen this one, got a call over the long weekend from a cousin of mine saying his neighbour had lost over a dozen ducks the weekend. He keeps duck, chickens, geese, bantams etc. Fox and cubs had been in during the middle of the day and went on a killing spree. Got down from dublin this moring went up had a look around and set a few snares, would of liked to set more in some good runs but sheep in the field. Had tried calling to no avail this afternoon but nothing showed probably to warm. Anyway my father and I called back up this evening around nine ish to check the snares, we brought the shotguns with us to see could we bag a few rabbits. Called in and grabbed the cousin and headed out. About 160 yards up the hill there is the vixen not a worry in world another cub about 100yrs on past her and the second cub off to her right. At this piont im swearing blue murder why did i not bring the .223 . I start to call using the palm of my hand but I cant get loud enough for them to take any real notice. Alot of noise around farmers cutting silage. So we split up and we see can we get to within shotgun distance I take the left side along with my cousin and my father takes the right side of the field the field is at a 45 degree angle up hill. We hug the ditch sticking to the shadows taking it nice and easy trying not to startle the sheep either after about 10 mins or so iv covered about 150 yards. My father was doing the same but the vixen must of smelled him and made her way to the ditch not sure were the other cub went as I had eyes on the other cub. Continue the stalk on for another 100 or so yards now right at the top of the field sheep start moving across to the right thought it would give my position away. Seen my father making a move for the near ditch that he is at about 70 yrd below me on the opposite side of the field, he later tells me he saw the vixen go in that way. From my view piont I was able to see the vixen about 80 yrds from my fathers position but he could not get a shot off and it was way to far for shotgun range. Anyway I start making my way across the top of the field nice and easy and see the cub he is a big hardy lad. He does not see me at all, but there is still some sheep in the way of a clear shot so I continue on very slowly and sheep move off nice and easy I get to within 15 yrds of him and let him have a no.6 from my lanber o/u over he goes a few kicks and he is dead. Thats number one down. We regroup had head the right side of the field after about 10 mins, we are about 80 yards down and second cub pops out from the ditch at about 30 yards BANG a no.6 spins him round Bang another round down he goes another fine cub. Now for the Vixen, we scanded the area for about 10 minutes or so nothing then my father catches something out of the corner of his eye in the next field its the vixen about 30 yrds away just at the start of a wooded area. We both get in to position and its Bang, bang, bang vixen dead.Overall a good evening no rabbits but my cousins neighbour is happy for a while anyway.

    Good little story there RH77.

IMO it's time to start lamping again now. I will stop around Patricks Day and start now. The cubs are hardy and can look after themselves now.

In fairness they are for the most part nowhere near hardy enough to survive yet. I saw some very strong cubs out and about by themselves around the middle of April but I've also been watching some very young ones around the last few weeks. The latter would be the norm.
What are they now on average - 3 months old?
I'll start in august as do most of the more sporting hunting people I know.

there's no sport shooting dopey cubs unless a farmer is in bother with them. I'll hold off till august.

I used to think i wouldnt shoot cubs or foxes this time of year but since all my poultry was taken i wouldnt hesitate now. Although that would be just around the house and the fields next to it. I wouldnt go all around the area but if one presented itself near enough my house i would shoot it. As was said this is vermin control for me, not sport. I wouldnt go out lamping other permissions until around august september but if someone wants to, it dosnt bother me. If a vixen with two cubs came and took your lamb or your poultry, would you wait till september to shoot them????

I tend to wait till august or sept myself but these cubs had a taste for duck and a taste for killing as well. My cousins neighbour said if he had not got out and threw a few stone and let off a few F**Ks they would of got alot more. I would not underestimate a few dopey cubs when they get a taste for killing. Id prescribe any centerfire round or a no. 5 or 6 within range :D:D

Curious, would a bb or a 4 or 1 cartridge not be better than a 5 or 6? I heard buckshot will drop a fox up to 80 yds. Can that be true?
