Why dont cyclists use the cycle tracks that are provided all over Dublin ? I see them nearly getting killed by buses and taxis when they use bus lanes and nearly hit by everything else aswell when there is an empty cycle track beside them. If I was cycling id be thinking about my safety and keeping away from traffic.

maybe search this board for one of the several threads on cycle lanes and general cycling in traffic? don't think we need to do this all again quite yet...

Cyclists not using lanes usually are thinking about their safety.

    Here is one: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055518718&highlight=cycle+lanes

    Anyone have another?

I don't know about Dublin, but here in Cork cycle lanes have the tendicy to disappear, lead into walls, and worst of all, come with curbs.

Us cyclists are picky, we need a continuous road to drive on. Not like you motorists who need, ... euh ... , a continuous road.

Sometimes I think road makers think of bicyclists as really fast pedestrians.

If a cyclists prefers the busy road over a cycle path there is a good chance the cycle lane isn't worth sh!t.

The exasperation you're getting in many of the replies here is because this question comes up again and again on this forum and so the answers you're curious about are all there already: you'll find the issues discussed and debated at great length and in great detail on numerous threads, if you can be bothered to look for them.

The short answer, as el tonto said, is that "Cyclists not using lanes usually are thinking about their safety."

The government's National Cycle Policy Framework (the PDF is here (1.1 MB)), published in April this year, has this to say about cycle lanes (amongst other facilities) in Ireland:
Transportation infrastructural designs need to be cycling friendly. Cycling-friendly means that routes taken by cyclists are safe, direct, coherent, attractive and comfortable. It is acknowledged that the quality of the dedicated cycling facilities designed and constructed to date in Ireland has been inadequate. (p. 7)

So, the lane that might look attractive when viewed from the relative comfort of a car/van/bus/lorry/whatever, is probably unsafe, indirect, incoherent, unattractive and uncomfortable when you actually try to use it. It's not cycling-friendly, which is a bit of a problem for a cycle lane. For more detail than that hit the search button :)

think I'm going to change the charter, requiring people to read the wiki on the common debates before wading in.
