Gas Permeable Contacts for children

My daughter who is nine suffers from high myopia(-13). She has been wearing glasses since she was three. Her myopia has progressed from -11 to -13. They tell me that this will continue during puberty and she will end up being a -18 or more. Am sick with worry over this.

Anyways she goes for yearly check ups (HSE). During her last visit the optometrist suggested contacts for her and promised that she would get back to us with a phone number something which she didnt do. I left messages and phoned her but she never got back to me.

I have giving up trying to contact her so am basically looking for a specialist now and was wondering if anyone had any experience with any eye doctors prescribing cotacts for children? I have read that gas permeable contacts can slow myopia progression. This is the reason I want her to start wearing them.

    Where are you based?
If you are based in Dublin both Donal O Malley (based in Dixon Hempenstall on Suffolk St) and Siobhan Eustace (based on Adelaide Road and in the National Optometry Centre in DIT) are both specialist contact lens fitters. They are probably the top two people in Ireland.
If your daughter is being seen in the Mater, Donal does clinics in that eye department and in Temple St.

    Hope this helps

As the above poster said, but just as a correction its Donal Mc Nally that you'd be looking for, just in case you had a problem looking for him as O Malley

That's right, they do slow myopia progression - I started wearing gas permeable contacts when I was fourteen for the same reason and my eyesight didn't get any worse after that. I've heard of people getting them at a much younger age as well. Go to eustace opticians, they're great.

Am so glad I opened this thread. Thankyou so much for the information.

My daughter is currently seen once a year in Naas in the opthalmic clinic (Dr Tempenay). We live in Kildare.

I will make an appontment at eustace opticians asap.

    Thanks. :)

Actually Donal O Malley is who I ment. He deals with a lot of kids under opthalmologists supervision. I know Donal and he is very good at what he does. And just to make it confusing he is also friends with Donal McNally and sometimes transfer patients between each other for second opinions
