PS3 Freezing as soon as I sign into PSN

As the above title suggests, my Playstation freezes as soon as the <Signed In> message appears in the top right corner of the screen. If I stop the Playstation from signing in, I can keep playing, offline only however.
Does anyone know what the problem is or how to fix it?
I can get it repaired as a last resort if no one knows what to do.
    Thanks in advance.

All I could suggest is try formatting the ps3's hard drive but this obviously will result in losing all your game saves, dlc e.t.c if you dont back it up first using an external hard drive... I have never heard of this kind of problem before but it cant hurt to try it because if you send off to sony, there going to have to wipe it anyway. Hope this helps :)

Thanks galwaylad but it turns out my playstation fixed itself.

Me being panicky, I kept trying to switch on my playstation hoping it was just some freak glitch.

After about 10 times, at the start up, it immediately went to a screen which told me, "The HDD has been corrupted. The Hard Drive will now be restored".

All I was allowed do was say "OK". There was no other option. I thought my Hard Drive was going to be erased so I was fairly freaked out.

Anyway it took about 20 seconds to complete and when I checked for everything I had stored on the Hard Drive, it was all still there! :D

I couldn't be happier now but I'd really like to know how this could have even happened and why it took several attempts before it decided to try to repair itself. Weird huh?

This is my brothers account by the way.

Nice one Juror, glad to hear ya got it sorted. That is weird alright that it took a few attempts to see that there was an error with the HD. But then again, people have some very strange issues with their ps3's that cant be explained lol. Well, at least you online again :)
