I noticed the following message on the GUI website. Something i'd never given any thought to, but i take it players have deferred paying their subs for a year and are still playing in opens, or have deferred and are giving their gui cards to others allowing them to play in opens?

The following important notice has been circulated to all affiliated Golf Clubs:

    Leave of Absence:
It is a matter for each Club to decide whether to allow a member who has been granted Leave of Absence to retain his handicap and which would provide the opportunity to compete in Open Competitions. In such circumstances that member will be liable for the Union Subscription and Provincial Levies.

If a Club decides to grant a member total Leave of Absence his GUI Member Card must be returned to the Golfing Union of Ireland Headquarters. If the period of Leave of Absence exceeds six months he will be required to obtain a new handicap in accordance with Clause 16 of the CONGU Unified Handicapping System.

    GUI Member Card Impersonation:
Any member of a Golf Club affiliated to the GUI shall face a minimum twelve months suspension of handicap if he allows:
    (a) another person to use his GUI Member Card in competition
    (b) borrows a GUI Member Card to be used by another person in competition

This is noting that Clause 24.1 (b) of the CONGU Unified Handicapping System states: “The handicap of a player shall be suspended by a Union, Area Authority or a player’s Home Club if in its opinion he has conducted himself in a manner prejudicial to the interests of his Union, Area Authority or a player’s Home Club or to the game of Golf.”

I'm taking time out later this year. From talking to my club I'll still have to pay a small amount each year to keep my membership. I presume this means that I'll keep my handicap and be able to play in opens when I take a holiday back home. I'd never enquired but presumed that would be the case...

There must be some courses out there that allow a complete stop on subscriptions hence this message from the GUI...

if you request a leave of absense for your membership, does it prevent you from playing...
    1. paying green fees in your home club?
    2. paying green fees in other clubs?

i am considering a leave of absense until 2011, but would still like to play in other clubs (even if outside competitions).

didn't realise you had to get new handicap in 2011 though...
