Hi there. I am looking to do a charity cycle this summer. I was interested in doing the ring of kerry but unfortunately I feel I haven't done anywhere near enough training I feel at this stage to participate and it probably comes a month too early for me. I am a primary school teacher so can put in loads of training in July and or August so was thinking that some event during August would suit me perfectly. I am relatively fit and looking for a challenge. Are there any events I could participate in? Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Sean Kelly Tour is at the end of August

Yeah Sean Kelly would be the one I would recommend too. I would only do the 100 though, unless you can get lots of hill training in. The 160 is quite tough, by all accounts.

Thats great thanks for that. Timing is a good bit better and seems a nice enough challenge.

You might surprise yourself - you've one month to do some bit of work - if you can manage a 40-50 mile spin with a 15-16mph average speed with out being flattened by the effort you *should* be able to get around the Ring well.

The whole thing is in relatively short hops between feed stops so if you pace yourself you should be able to do it. I'm doing my tenth one this year and have seen all sorts, sizes and capabilities doing it, and the fact that you've mentioned training and found this forum to ask the question would put you ahead of many 'day cyclists' that complete it each year.

But if you're looking for a good spin in August definitly consider the Sean Kelly Tour. The 160 km is a very challenging course with some big climbing, the 100km is not as severe but definitely a good challenge cycle.

Don't think I'll have the time to put in enough training over the next month or so to allow me to do the ring. Time off in July and August will allow me to put in sufficient training to do the 100km. Will enjoy the challening cycle. I currently only have a hybrid bike. Is it essential to have a racer? Excuse my ignorance and thanks for the reply.

Hybrid is fine for most events though you'll suffer a bit from the lack of different hand positions (assuming it's a flat bar hybrid). Would recommend bar ends at least.
