    I have a 1977 Daimler Sovereign XJ6, 3.4l and I let it run out of petrol recently. I know, major mistake, as it seems to have sucked up all the crap from the bottom of the tank and deposited it in the fuel system.

    I have since topped up both tanks, put it a fuel additive to clean the system, but it is still running terrible after a full tanks use. It needs the (manual) choke on all the time, as it won't idle without it. It'll barely run without the choke on.

    My mechanic had it the other day and cleaned out some crap from the float bowls in the carbs, but it hasn't made any difference.

    Now I'm not hugely mechanically minded, but does anyone has any suggestions as to how to remedy this myself?

    It has been suggested to take it to McNamaras to get the carbs properly serviced and set up, but if there is crap elsewhere in the fuel system this won't work. Probably should be the last thing to do.

    might be worth putting a fuel filter in while your at it to make sure this doesn't happen again

    For what it's worth, I brought a Peugeot 406 to McNamaras a few years ago with an electrical problem (car wouldn't start). The parts were less than €200 in total, but they had the car for 10 months, and charged €1800 labour.

    I would recommend a filter too, straight away. I also dont see how an additive can clean rust and crap from a tank ?

    Try a decent quality filter, get the idle jet cleaned, and run it. If the filter gets dirty quickly then you will have no choice but to drain and clean the tank, however it would be a good iea to get a decent fuel sample first just in case you are barking up the wrong tree.

    Get a jamjar full of fuel and leave it for an hour to settle. Then decide if there is dirt there.

    I had a look at the manual over lunchtime and I see there is probably three sets of filters there already! One in the boot, which I think is pre-fuel pump, one probably installed by the previous owner, just before the carbs and a small gauze type of filter going into each carb.

    Hopefully they are just bunged up and a clean/replacement will sort out the problem.
