I was just wondering do you need to own a car and have insurance to take your full driving test. And are you required to take a certain amount of driving lessons?

    Driving test, no but recommended!!
Insurance, you don't need to own your own car but you do need to be insured on whatever car you do use. A lot of people do the driving lessons and use the instructors car then for the test.

So you dont use a testers car, you must use your own car or use someone elses cqar which you are insured under?

You're not allowed to drive on a public road without insurance, ever.

You can use a driving school car for both lessons and the test, in which case, their insurance policy should cover you to drive.

Driving lessons can be very expensive however... Do you need your own insurance for taking the driving test or will they cover you?

Yes if you are using your or anybody elses car other than a driving schools, you will need to be named on the owners policy or have your own policy.

No the testers don't supply a car, it's up to you to provide it. That can be either your car or a friends or relatives in which case you must be insured for the test, or as other posters have said you can use a driving instructors car, in which case his insurance will cover you.
Its not recommended to do your test without taking lessons, as your limiting your chances of passing.
