    Cheetahs winger class act too.

Who's the likely fullback out of that squad? Rose, Steyn or Fourie? Please be Rose!

Fastest winger in south africa. Faster than Habana even. Scored a hattrick against England in the AI's.

Will most likley be Rose. Surprised at that really. No sign of Frans Steyn or Zane Kirchner or Terblanche..... de villiers is really taking a risk with Rose in the squad. The forwards looks dangerous but no Heinrich Brussouw is a mystery.

Huh? Frans Steyn is in it.

edit: Oh I see Amabokke doesn't have him in that list. I was looking on the bbc website. He's definitely included.

Thought Chavhanga was meant to be the fastest?

Fran Steyn's injured and going to Paris.

No he's recovered from injury and in the squad according to scrum.com. PDV mentioned him also when talking about who could play 15.

Really? Weird, read yesterday he was on the verge of signing for Racing.

Yeah I heard that too. I assume he'd have to stay with Sharks until after the Currie Cup has finished though.

Don't underestimate Earl Rose, he is only 24 and had so far solid performances. He was Craven week player of the tournament, played SA u/21 and player of the year 2005. Although he didn't play he toured with the boks to the UK so are farmiliar with their setup.

Frans Steyn is included and will be either him, Fourie or Rose on fullback.

Heinrich Brussouw is unlucky but Burger and Smith is still ahead even if Burger had a quiet season. As a combination him and Smith are first choice.

Kirchner wasn't selected either as he does not have the experience on test level.

no Zane Kirchner? thot hed been playin some great rugby for the bulls.

    15. F Styen, 14. Pietersen, 13. Jacobs, 12. de Villiers, 11. Habana, 10. M Styen,9. Du Preez, 1. Mtawarira, 2. du Plessis, 3. Smit, 4. Botha, 5. Matfield, 6. Burger, 7. Smith, 8. Spies.

    Replacements: 16. Steenkemp 17. Ralepelle 18. Bekker 19. Russouw 20. Januaire 21. Pienaar 22 Fourie.

    O Ndungane

    J Nokwe

    W Olivier

    E Rose

    D Carstens
    R Kankowski

Surprised not to see Brussouw in the Squad had a very good year from what i seen him play. And was played in the AI's. Between Kankowski and Russouw for the back row bench spot, most likely be Russouw as he offers abit more in other positions. I have Morne Styen in the starting team however I no most would probably have Peinaar, btu Styen has been unreal for the bulls this season so feel he deserves a shot. Flouire could also play instead of jacobs or F.Styen at full back depending on what you were after. Rose is a good player but there is much better ahead of him. Olivier will get a chance at center and the 2 wingers that I have left out of the match day 22 are class acts but Pietersen and habana are simply better. The Boks only real weakness is the front row. Smit is not really a tighthead and the Beast is a real treat in open play but not great scrummager. After that boks will have the edge:(

Looking at that Boks first XV I feel that the lions have almost no chance. Almost man for man they are better with only a few exceptoins like BOD.....

If they win this series it will be the Lions greatest ever achievement.

Both our props are better if they pick Jenkins and Murray

Both our 10's and Both fullback are better and I would argue one of the wings is better and Bod.
    Thats 6 from 15.

Although If Morne Steyn plays in his good form I would put him as equal with our 10's,although he is unproven internationaly. They will however go with Ruan Pienaar who is not as good as either of our 10's or even Earl Rose lol.

As idle curiosity, and mainly for shíts and giggles:

    15. F. Steyn v 15. Lee Byrne... (Or Kearney) - tough to call, Steyn's boots unreal, what's his defence like?
    14. Pietersen v 14. Bowe - SA
    13. Jacobs v 13. BOD - Lions
    12. De Villiers v 12. Flutey - Lions (just?)
    11. Habana v 11. Shane Williams - on form Habana - SA
    10. Morne Steyn v 10. Stephen Jones - SA
    9. Du Preez v 9. Philips - SA
    8. Spies v 8. Heaslip - SA
    7. Smith v 6. Ferris/Croft - Lions (hmmm. Maybe anyway)
    6. Burger v 6. M. Williams - SA
    5. Matfield v 5. POC - SA
    4. Botha v 4. AWJ - SA
    3. Smit v 1. Sheridan - Lions
    2. Du Plessis v 2. No idea - SA
    1. Mtawarira v 3. Ehm, is it Gethin Jenkins or whoever? Never good with getting props straight, and even worse with Welsh ones :o - Lions anyway, but barely

    Suggests we'll probably lose...

True, in some poisitions we have the advantage but looking at the big picture especially the back row and the locks we are second best. The game will be won and lost there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,249 ✭✭✭Stev_o

On form that their backrow is weak, Burger and Smith have had crap S14 season and Spies won't have the luxury of making those runs if those two don't up their act. Honestly id put Kankowski instead of Burger then the Lions would be seriously fupped.

Watching TV last night and they were comparing the All blacks squad and the boks squad and they were saying that only 2 from the all blacks squad would get into the Boks squad.

That is the measure of talent they have!

That because NZ have been pilaged of all their players and SA havent. If NZ had their full compliment of players very few Saffers would make it.

Also how only 2 players made it in?

    McCaw
    Muliaina
    Nonu
    Sivivatu
    Masanga
    Donald

Are all better than their SA counteparts and I havent even looked hard at the teams.

    .

Like who? Carl Hayman is the only player they would take back into their squad who has left NZ
Also how only 2 players made it in?.

    McCaw - Injured
Muliaina - He was one they would have picked.
Nonu - Apparently not good enough to make the boks squad according to deaker
    Sivivatu - Injured
Masanga - Didnt even make the all blacks squad is in the junior AB's though
Donald - Not as good as Muliaina

The other player they would have picked is Woodcock

I just hope that P de V doesn't pick JP Pietersen at fullback and Earl Rose at flyhalf. A lot of Saffas will be crying into their beers if that happens. He's seems fixated on playing 'heads-up' rugby rather than percentage rugby.

Surely the recent Bulls performance and success with playing the type of game that we're known for should lead him to pick Frans at fullback and Morne Steyn at Flyhalf.

Dude flutey wont wont start.. ferris will start over croft... S Williams prob wont start either

Starting 15 for the first test will be

    15 Byrne
    14 Bowe
    13 BOD
    12 Roberts
    11 Monye
    10 Jones
    9 Philips
    8 Wallace
7 Williams if heaslip at 8 then wallace at 7
    6 Ferris
    5 POC
    4 AWj
    3 SHer
    2 Whoever
    1 Whoever

The only position where the Lions are clearly ahead is outside center. If Roberts keeps going the way he is the it's possible they will have an advantage there.

In every other Department the Boks are ahead although at fullback and with Bowe only slightly.

As mentioned further up in the thread the Boks have the loose forwards domination sewn up. Botha and Matfield were head and shoulders the best players in the world in the S14 final. It's going to take a huge effort from the front 8 to win the outright war in the first test and it's going to be that. The first test is an all or nothing affair.

Ah I know it's not perfect, it's merely an attempt to work out a rough team. ^^

In fairness we probably build the Boks up a little. The advantage of playing at altitude in teh S14 final at home is understated. Also, the defensive play in S14 sometimes isn't world class.

They're better yeah, but not as better.
