Hope someone can give me good advice, please

My PS3 has recently decided not to play my games, dvds etc.
The ps3 was bought for me by my girlfriend back in November 2007 for Xmas.
I dont have the receipt or the warranty as i moved house last year and i think they must of been thrown out with rubbish
If I ring Sony do you think I'd get a replacement as its a common fault with the PS3 without a receipt or warranty
Has anyone had a similar experience

Do a search for blu-ray of death on this forum. It will give you an idea of people's experiences.

Same thing happened to me. I rang sony and explained what had happened. number is 0818365065. blu ray death it was. Bought it dec 2007 so they said it was out of warranty. Had receipt. paid 160 to retailer for new ps3 and gave them my old oneo send back. ring sony and see what they say bout not having a receipt. They'll be looking the serial number off your ps3 so have that beside you when you ring.

Ring em up and tell them you know this is a common problem and if it was an xbox it would be replaced free.
    Worth a try

I had the same problem, out of warranty. Rang Sony, they took the serial number and arranged a courier to pick it up.
Had a replacement 80GB (I originally had a 60GB), plus an extra dual shock controller within 5 days.

this isn't an attack on the op, but can we get a sticky about this? every week there's a new thread about this issue and the answers are always the same

exact same thing happened mine, i was moving around my bedroom last week and put everything back, tryed it out and it wouldnt play games , would play dvds though! i ended up restoring it and it worked!

the only bad thing was losing all my save data but at least i can play it now!
i think try restoring it before you do anything!

E-mailed Sony, told me i had to go back to the retailer and pay 160 euro.I was pretty miffed about that and told them so, I got this reply:
    Hi Craig,

Thank you for your mail. We are very sorry to learn of the difficulties that you have experienced with your PlayStation 3.

PlayStation 3 is manufactured to very high standards indeed and is typically a very reliable product. The current UK and Ireland installed base of over 2.5 million, we could not operate if there was an inherent fault with the product. I hope that it reassures you to know that we can confirm the failure rate of PlayStation 3 is extremely low and well below industry standard. Despite this, we cannot guarantee that products will not fail at a particular time. All parts exceed our stringent quality criteria, and units are rigorously tested before leaving the factory. However, as with any item of the technological complexity of PlayStation, units can fail.

Whilst I appreciate that you have experienced a fault with your PlayStation 3 and completely understand your frustration and disappointment, I regret that I am unable to offer a gratis replacement of your unit on this occasion. We do have a flexible stance with our warranty adherence policy, as we do like to give our consumers some leeway for unforeseen circumstances, for example if you are slightly over the warranty period Unfortunately, the length of time that has elapsed since your warranty ended goes beyond any margin we could entertain, without seriously undermining our warranty policy and as such we are only able to offer a replacement console at a cost of €131 + VAT (€160). I would take this opportunity to reiterate that this covers the logistical cost of supplying you with a replacement unit which covers cost of labour, parts, post/packaging, admin and VAT and that Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) makes no profit from this service. In fact this service currently operates at a loss in order to offer the best price that we can to our consumers. We would prefer the cost to be lower, but we like many manufacturers have been badly affected by the weakness of the pound and the strength of the yen and euro, that has forced up costs by a considerable amount. In spite of the increase in our costs, we have actually recently reduced the cost of the exchange process to the end user and actually operate under the industry standard of less than half the cost of a retail unit.

Again, I fully understand your frustration in this matter and I understand that the failure of any product is very disappointing. However, for an exchange of a unit that is out of its guarantee period, we have to levy the charge outlined above. Once again I can confirm that this is SCEE procedure and I regret that I am unable to make an exception in this case.

We would like to offer our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused. If you wish to go ahead with your out of warranty exchange please return to your retailer, if they can not assist please reply with the following information and we will make alternative arrangements for you.

    Full Name
Address for replacement (preferably business address. Someone will need to be present at the address from Monday- Friday to sign for replacement)
    Contact Number
Console model Type (starting with CEC)
Do you hold receipt and if so what is the date on this? Receipt is required to prove warranty status
    Retailer and Branch?

    Kindest Regards,

    Playstation Ireland
