Very interesting short article from the BBC. Some nice theories on why hat use declined and on the rise of hat sales once again!

For some of us hat wearing never went away. :)

I have to admit to having mixed feelings about the resurgance in hat wearing. One one hand it's great to have youth taking up the mantle and donning a hat, plus there are more and more sources for hats.

On the otherhand I do feel a certin loss of eliteism when I get on the train and I see that I'm not the only hat wearer.
When walking through the city it was always good to see another hat wearer coming towards you, like minds passing in the street. You would nod, even tip your hat, acknoledge each other in some way and then pass by feeling a little lift in your day from a simple shared experience. Now however therre are so many hats out there that I have suddenly become commonplace.

Vanishing elitism is always a good thing ;)

However, even hat wearers can maintain their snobbery amongst other hat wearers. For example, a man wearing a top hat or bowler is setting himself apart from the baseball cap wearing hoodie and can still look down on such people if he is insecure and feels the need to assert some 'superiority' ;)

We must remember that even when all men wore hats, the hat you wore very much spoke about your place in society. Today however, that's not really the case.

The bowler hat, once confined to London City men, solicitors and accountants in post-war Britain became an icon of anarchic depravity in The Clockwork Orange when worn by Alex and his crew.
