    hi all,

Bought a Vaio about 3 months ago in the Sony Centre in Jervis but the thing gave up the ghost last night. Does anyone know if it's still under warantee? Do the Sony Centre even offer one?

Also, I've list the receipt, I did pay by credit card though and I remember the date I bought it, can they check their records or will they refuse to deal with me cos I have no receipt???

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

In what way did it give up the ghost?
Perhaps it's only a small problem?

Have you registered it with vaio? Once you do you can ring a helpline number and they will send a courier to you to collect it and bring it for repair. All vaio have a 12 month warranty as stantard which you can upgrade through vaio themselves

    thanks for the responses.

I've no idea what's wrong with it, there's power going into the laptop but windows won't start. It has tried to fix itself but has failed!

I have no idea if I registered it or not!!!

I really just want to know if I'm wasting my time bringing it down to the Sony centre in Jervis with no receipt (is paying by credit card proof of purchase?) or will they arrange for the laptop to be fixed.

Yes if you have it on credit card bill then you can usually use that as proof of purchase.

The error you're descibing sounds like an operating system error, not a hardware fault. It could be hardware but 90% of the time it's software.

Your credit card statement is fine as proof of purchase. It'll be under warranty but "I'd imagine" they'll run a restore procedure to put the laptop back into the state it was when you bought it. So if you've important data on it you'll need to figure some way to get it off first (maybe boot from a linux DVD and back it up to a removable hard drive or USB key).

Do you have anything plugged into the USB ports?

I would think it normal policy for any of the Sony centres to have asked for your details when buying the vaio as a proof of purchase on their system. Ring the helpline number ( I think it's 014073040) and enter your serial number. If it's registered you'll get through to an operator

OP, it sounds like it could just be the Windows Operating System that's gone belly up, although the info you've given us is quite vague. If it's an Operating System problem then it's generally not covered by warranties, if however there is actually something wrong with the hardware of the laptop then it should be fixed or replaced under warranty.

My relative bought a Vaio which began to give numerous problems soon after purchase. He was given the run around even with a receipt. Its been going on for months. The centre where it was bought is now closed. Sony want to give 25% of the fixing cost but its not good enough. The cost could be anything. Each time he phones he gets onto somebody with bad english. Ive heard several complaints about the after service.
It cost 860E which is fairly expensive. He is now seeking legal advice.
