Problems with graphics card.

I have a HP Pavillion dv9500 notebook pc, not sure exactly what make model. when I try to run an application that requires a 3d accelerator the whole computer freezes. Prior to it freezing the screen will flicker black.

I opened the laptop and removed any dust from the cpu fan, i could not locate the graphics card. I have done everything that I could think of...

Is there a program that i can download to give me some idea as to what the problem is?

When i go into device manager and click on the display adapter it says it is working fine, i have updated the drivers also.

Is it expensive to replace a laptop graphics card? I don't want to waste a load of money on a card if i can get it fixed.

The card I have now is a Nvidia Geforce 8400M GS.

    Any help is much appreciated.

    Thank you.

That card is prone to failure, it's hard to tell if it is the card that has failed, but the symptoms sound like it could be a failing card. I know that doesn't help you much, anyway, how old is the laptop? As if it's still under warranty i'd be taking it back.

hi!first things first....go to start menu then click my computer...on the left hand side there is a bar..the top sector of the bar says system tasks..under that is system information...click system information.when that opens up you will have all the info you need to know about your laptop.check the application you are trying to run against the specs of your laptop to see if its viable.you may just need ram.....but since i have no idea of your specs or what your trying to run im not going to hazard a guess! if you do put up the specs and name the application im sure a geek will try to help you with your problem, sorry i couldnt be of help

The card is compatible with the pc and the other componants. So that's not a problem.

I was thinking the card was failing myself... sucks really as I only have the laptop about 18 months.

Anyone know a program to run a diagnostics test?

Anyone know how I could check for alternative cards? Maybe something that doesn't need so much resources. I only play wow and stream. That's the height of it.

Download hwmonitor prog this measures temp and fan speed.Temp should not be over 55degress normally. Can you hear the fan coming on.Sounds like grahics card is overheating.GOOGLE HWMONITOR PROGRAM,its free.GO to start menu run type dxdiag run grahics tests if you want.

Was that actually supposed to be a helpful post? And calling people geeks will win you no friends around here.

Anyway, omyatari, hwmonitor is what you need, as gamer says. Also google the type of graphics card, I believe there are known problems with that particular model.

She has a fanspeed and heat monitor, I cannot remember the name of it.

In the Dxdiag menu, how does one run a graphics test? What are the commands? Thanks in advance.

    Hi OP,

I know your pain, a few years ago i went thru something similar with an ATI card but got it fixed eventually.

    Try this,

1 - update the firmware of the laptop bios. On bootup you should be able to press F12 or F2 or maybe delete key to get into your BIOS. find the BIOS version and then download an updated version and install it.

2 - try older versions of the graphics card driver, this has worked for me in the past.

    Best of luck m8 :)

Hi again OP, just found this on an Nvidia forum which might help. This person had a similar issue to you and this resolved it for them.

"I had the same issue on my laptop with the same card until I disabled the Threading feature in the Videocard Control Panel. Some games will handle it fine and some won't. Some may work for a bit and crash shortly after."
