So been thinking about getting into triathlons for a long time, but one thing putting me off is the potential cost involved. I don't have ea suitable bike, I don't have any kind of wetsuit - I don't really know anyone who is into triathlons so don't even think I could borrow these things.

So how much we talking ? Obvious expensive things to me are th ebike and the wetsuit - but what are the other costs ?

The cost to start with doesnt have to be that high, you can get a second hand bike , wetsuit can be rented for races, and a pair of runners. Don't go mad splashing out on things to start with main thing is to enjoy the sport.

Don't go spending a fortune when you don't know whether you'll stick with it.
Also, there several tri's where the swim is in a pool. Joey Hannon in Limerick in May is one, not sure about the others. This means all you need is a bike and a pair of runners
Cheap new bike/second hand bike is around 300-500. Runners will be around 100+ if you're going to do some training and don't want to cause injuries.
And don't be put off by the amount of gadgets you see people with. They're all just extras.
