    Hi,

I am planning on doing a masters by distance learning through the university of london and I a just looking for some advice.
Has anyone here studied a course through them before - what did you think of it? Plus what would be people's thoughts on doing a masters by DL?

I want to try and claim tax back as the fees are quite high - can they be claimed back on distance learning courses through the UK?

    thanks

university of london is kind of similar to the old NUI in that it's a confederation of different colleges. Many of them have excellent reputations ( Kings, SOAS, UCL), others have decent reputations (Birkbeck etc) - without knowing which course and college you're doing its hard to say more.

I can't advise on merits of DL but be prepared for a lot of work - i did a FT masters and worked harder than I ever did in undergrad.

No problem with Masters by DL really - lots of people have done it, and found it fine.

UoL External tend to get a bad rep regarding the amount of support you get (and additional support costs more on top of your fees).

As far as I know post-graduate fees may be eligible for tax relief. Check out http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/it/leaflets/it31.html for full details.

    Hi,

thanks - it would be a Masters in HR from Birkbeck. On it's brochure it raves about it's reputation - but I am sure they would do that anyway! Did you study with University of London yourself?

Hi Buffybot - thankzs for the advice - did not see anywhere about additiobal support costing extra - must look into that.

saw that University of leicester do a distance learning masters in hrm too - anyone have any experience this course/ college?

Many of the UoL courses supply you with a basic reading list and course guide - and that's pretty much it. You buy the books and it's up to you to learn enough to complete the exams - this is why they can do it so cheap. One of the reasons why I didn't go down that route

Some UoL colleges doing external programs, I believe, are getting better but the majority still provide a very..basic..experiece.

Birkbeck are (and have always been) focussed on the part-time learner so undoubtedly they're probably much more geared up for distance learners.
