The real marker here was his performance more then the time. He ran down Wallace Spearmon after 35m. He made Spearmon and Carter look like club runners.

I don't think he's even fully fit yet. His coach always works him for the US trials which are still a way away...

very very nice indeed and very early in the season too, might set up some very nice races if he keeps it up

This is a fantastic performance at this stage of the season, he had destroyed the field after 10metres, even the stadium commentator can't believe how he has run!

Good to see him back. Little v large in races with Bolt ths season. Bolt will only be the superstar athletics needs him to be if he has somebody who is at least getting close to him and pushing him on. Gay could be the guy to do that.

I miss the days where the american sprinters always show off before and after an 100m sprint.

Another phenomenal run by Gay in Rome tonight: 9.77 +0.4.

That ties his own US record.

And he decisively beat one of his top rivals, Asafa Powell.

Looked class tonight. Cant wait to see him against Bolt.

Needs to happen more often though, once a year for the best in the sport to compete is not enough. If they competed more often it would create a lot of interest (especially in the US with an American runner) and would be better for everybody in the long run.

We should be seeing Gay v Bolt v Powell all summer!

Gay wants to beat Bolt and kill the hype this year we may see that next year but by not racing him he is getting inside Bolts head. I think his mental tactics for this year are spot on. in terms of media the build up will add to things if they do race more often against each other next year. I mean look at Powell he is now terrified of Bolt from being consitantly beaten

Id give the 200m to Tyson Gay in Berlin but the 100m to Bolt..

Why? Gay is just getting better and looking class while doing so?

I dunno maybe it because it the first race he went for it this year but his last week impressed memore than any of his hundreds but Bolt over 2 and maybe Gay put up a bit of a challenge in the 100

I'd go the opposite. I think Bolt may be basically unbeatable over 200 meters when fit. He's more fallible over 100 and it will be interesting to see how he reacts when put under pressure. He could find himself behind Gay in the nesxxt lane after 40 meters of the 100 final and then we'll see what he's made of.

Great to be able to have the debate though. For his start quality, Bolt has/will be great for athletics but a major rivalry would be perfect.

Very exciting indeed. Gay's run now means we now have a major rivalry. Gay won't crumble on the line in Berlin so Bolt would have to run very fast to beat him. We could see something out of this world (again).
