I won't be able to go to college the day the results go up on the noticeboard, but I heard you can check your general result for the year (IE an overall 2:1, 2:2 etc.) online somewhere at midnight the day before they officially come up. Is this an urban legend of some sort? Or am I just rather ignorant?*

*I understand the desire to quote that particular sentance and guffaw extravagantly, but since I have already recognised the potential humour value it makes any subsequent joke lose its bite. You might even say this irrelevant and drawn out footnote is comedy material, but since I have also recognised that fact that in turn destroys any bite in such a witty remark. I think I should stop typing now. You're beginning to think I'm completely nuts.

You'll be able to get them online, this page will give you a date and time. The details available will depend on your course/school, some get just a grade, some get a subject breakdown as well.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 6,488 ✭✭✭Denerick

They normally have the subject breakdown a couple of days later, but I'm asking whether they put the general results up online anywhere before that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,881 ✭✭✭Kurtosis

To the best of my knowledge, they put the results up (grade +/- subject breakdown) at the time and date specified and that's as much as they put up online. It's possible in some subjects that they send out the subject breakdown later on. Don't think you'll be getting any indication of results before the time on that page.

Speaking of this; any word on when the repeats are set to be held this year?

    They are usually posted here.

But that site seems to have fallen into a state of disrepair.

Perhaps they only update it once a year?

I found that page the other day and it was fine..

Edit - oh wait, this is the page I found:

    http://www.tcd.ie/Examinations/Results/vpexamresults.php

When you go to the local page, that's the link for 'undergraduate examination results'

Exam results go up at 10am, and usually nto before.

The only time i've ever experienced the midnight urban legend was for a take home exam in first year, the question was supposed to be available at 10am but was sent out at midnight.

It depends. I knew that the years before me had their final degree results appear on the Internet and on the noticeboard outside the Arts Block at pretty much the same time (I did TSM). Lo and behold, however, last year we got an email quite late in the day, saying that the results wouldn't be put online until "at least" a whole week after their release - and so, 200 of us were expected to show up at the noticeboard and vie with each other in that relatively small space to find our student numbers on a few paltry pieces of paper.

Luckily for College, some people were already at home/starting their careers/travelling halfway across the world. Not so luckily for the people concerned, they had to rely on the rest of us poor sods shouting down the phone line at them.

Basically, don't rely on past practice or precedent in results being released... the incompetence of Trinity admin is something that continuously perplexes. And I loved my years here, but I really, really doubt a similar incident would have happened in UCD.

UCD is great at administration but bad at teaching. I know people who do history in UCD who didn't read a single independent historical monograph going into these exams - they just downloaded lecture notes (AKA, bulletpoints) and regurgatated them on the day. Might as well have been doing Leaving Cert. history all over again.

That said, the history office has me completely confused... The breakdown will be out a couple of days after the announcement of the results next Friday... Will that be on the saturday or will we poor sods have to wait until the following monday? I'm unable to go especially to Dublin to look at a bloody noticeboard with 200 other anxious students. And also consider the amount of English/American/Canadian students in Trinity. Trinity really needs to begin using the fecking internet and throw itself into the 21st century!

The annoying thing is that they did use the Internet in previous years - they've actually regressed! When I was a first year, I was able to get my overall results and my breakdown at the exact time that they were posted on the noticeboard. They must have thought we had it too easy after that...

The breakdown will most likely not be out until at least the Monday - I can't see them making an effort over the weekend. In fact, if you get it that quickly, you'll be lucky. It was something like two weeks after actual results last year for me, though I may be exaggerating slightly as I can't remember the exact details.

Exactly! College will get this eventually, everyone else knows it already though it seems.

That page doesn't even come up on my browser, but i found the exam results on TCD local somewhere else. Only about 5 hours after someone had emailed them around!

    Passed though, woo hoo! :)

Exam results finalized at meeting of examiners.

Exam results sheet prepared in academic department.

Exam results sheet delivered to Exams Office.

Exams Office scrutinize submitted results to check that they conform to elaborate rules and are likely to pass muster with Student Records.

Exams Office reject results sheet: back to department for revision. Iterate.

Exams Office accept results sheet: Exams Office take delivery of named and anonymous versions; Exams Office will scan anonymous version and post it on the Web; department will publish printed version on noticeboard.

Practicalities will govern when the results are posted on the noticeboard and when they are posted on the Web. Problems may arise that delay the preparation of the results. If the Exams Office reject the version first submitted, there will obviously be a delay. If results are delivered to the Exams Office or are accepted by them late in the day there may be a delay in posting the results on the Web.

    @Sabbath Lily

    Consequences of 'restructuring'.

Before 'restructuring' the College had well-staffed offices at Faculty level, which included the TSM office. Restructuring devolved administration to the level of 'Schools', and, as a result, offices handling inter-disciplinary programmes like TSM and Science lost administrative and executive staff, who were deployed elsewhere.

Is it true we need our original passwords to get at our results online? I was able to access the TSM page using my current password, will that change when the results are realeased? Thanks in advance!

The original password is needed for me when I access the site on my home PC but when I'm in TCD on one of the computers I can get into it using my changed password.

Back on topic... my exam results aren't out til the end of June.
