About a Core Quad Processor

    Packard Bell iPower X9810

    Intel® Core 2 Quad Q8200 processor
    (2.33GHz, 1333MHz FSB, 4MB Cache)

I intend to buy a pc with the above processor. I basically need it for gaming. The processor they want in this particular game is a 2.4GHz, I know the processor I'm intending to buy is a 2.33GHz, but as it is Quad Core - someone told me before that this is like having it 4 times over, really more like an 8.00GHz. I don't know how true this is, so I'm leaving it to the experts on here. I'd appreciate any advice :)

It means you have 4 cores, each at 2.33 GHz. Describing it as equivalent to 8 GHz is extremely misleading. A single threaded app, as most things still are, will only run on 1 core. For most games a dual core at 3GHz would be better than a quad at 2.33 GHz. In the longer term, more games are taking advantage of quad cores, so it's a better investment in that sense.

    That's aload of muck.

If you want to game you'd be better off getting a high clocked Core2Duo unless you want to overclock.

The game I want to play requires a 2.4GHz P4 Processor or equivalent.
The one I'm planning to buy is

    Intel® Core 2 Quad Q8200 processor
    (2.33GHz, 1333MHz FSB, 4MB Cache)

That's why I really need to know if this processor would play the game properly. Do you think it will even though it is only a 2.33GHz. Is it because it is a core 2 quad that makes the difference.

2.33 GHz of a Core 2 core is worth far more than 2.3 GHz of a P4 core.

Make sure that the graphics card is at least 128meg vram video ram sm2 shader model 2 capable, for vista os 2gig ram main pc memory is ideal.A Dual core 2.2ghz cpu pc with 1gig ram and a fast graphics card will run any game.
eg Street fighter 4 needs sm3 graphics card 512meg vram to run with all graphical effects on.IF it has a 9800gt graphics card then it will run any game at hi detail. That has directx 10 and SM3/ 4 compatibility.

Someone was telling me that a laptop would be as good for gaming, so I was thinking of buying one instead of the pc. So I was looking at one today. It has a good graphics card as well. I'd be grateful if you could take a look at the specs for me and let me know if you think it is ok for gaming. I really want it for the sims 3.
The specs for the sims 3 are
    FOR WINDOWS VISTA
    * 2.4 GHz P4 processor or equivalent
    * 1.5 GB RAM
    * A 128 MB Video Card with support for Pixel Shader 2.0
    * Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 1
    * At least 6.5 GB of hard drive space with at least 1 GB of additional space for custom content and saved games.

The laptop I'm considering buying has the following specs

    HP X18-11010

    Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz
    (Centrino)
    Memory 4GB (2 x 2GB)
    Hard Drive 320GB
Graphics Card - Nvidia GeForce 9600m
Genuine Windows Vista (R)Home Premium 64bit

The graphics card was listed on the sims 3 official website so I know that's ok.
    I'd appreciate the advice.

Those specs you listed are the minimum system requirements for The Sims 3 so while yes the game will run it could very well be a case of the game not running very well on a system like that.

I'm not sure why you are ,harping on about SM2- Literally any graphics card you could buy today would support it. SM 3 Came out in 2004 if i remember correctly. Would recommend getting a card with at least 256mb of GDDR3. Also don't go looking for "vram", it does not stand for video ram, vram has not been used in GPU's since the 90's. Current cards use variants of GDDR.

    ok,
So what do you want your pc/laptop to do?

The specs you'd need to run that game would cost less than E400 in a pc and maybe around 500 in a laptop.

You really need to decide whether you want a laptop or a pc and also what you'll be using the pc/laptop for!!!

Nobody can give you a good recommendation until you tell us what you'll be using the pc/laptop for!

Please please, don't give up on this forum as it's very possible to mess up buying this pc and spend way too much money without good help...

+1, you definitely need to decide what you need. If you need something to be portable then go for a laptop, if you just want a home pc that does not need to move around then go for a desktop. I know there are desktop replacement laptops, but for spec and price a desktop machine is always going to be cheaper spec for spec.

If you're planning on getting a desktop then this wouldn't be a bad option.
You could save more on the motherboard and get a case with psu inbuilt which would save you another bit.
