    Hi guys,

Looking for a bit of advice here. Back in January I registered two .ie domains for a project I was hopefully going to startup.

Unfortunately it fell through & while I haven't given up on it quite yet, I want to try to make some money off the domains. I naturally don't want to give away any personal details so am not posting them here but will inform you by PM if you're interested.

Is it possible to rent them ? I believe that the actual domains could be quite lucrative to someone with the money to back them (not me then). They're a sexy subject (not porn) & are quite snappy (not amazon.ie). Although their real estate value wouldn't be anywhere near what their .com equivalents would be, I would still maintain that they could make money for someone...

The question is how do I make them make money for me ?

Anyone any advice on how to make some cash from them ?

The IEDR forbid you from selling the domains, not sure about renting them.

If they are good generic names, that could get some type in traffic, you could use one of the domain parking service like sedo.com to generate some income.

It won't make you a fortune, but it could generate some money while you are waiting to develop the domains.

e.g. if you owned a domain like cars.ie you would get people who assume there is a website at cars.ie typing it into their browser address bar.

sorry to hijack the thread - but how can you make money from sedo ?

I have about 10 websites parked - for various business ideas/projects - same problem lack of money/time to invest in doing these properly - I could develop the websites myself but they would look amateurish, and have been getting quotations of over €5K each to develop for what I want.

Well you could partner with a developer/SEO....

Renting provies an Issue - as Paul mentioned on IWF - the owner of the domain could pull this at any time, therefore any site would be worthless immediately...

If you think they're so valuable - you can build a business around them and then sell the business which owns the .ie - if it was a valid business and sale, you could do it that way.

€5k for a site - depends what you want to do, what functionality you need.

Parking sites - I can't see that this would be hugely profitable - maybe in the US market, if you owned cars.com or something.

Sign up with Sedo (Sedo.com / SedoParking.com), divert your domain names to them, they'll display pay per click ads, and everytime someone clicks on the ads, you make some money. I think Google offer a similar program.

To make any money from them, they really need to be generic domain names that someone will actually type into their address bar - typically one word generic names are best.

Here's an example of a sedo listing: http://www.cameras.ie

Generally, you are not going to make a lot of money out of it, but if the domains are pointing nowhere at the moment, you could generate some money towards the renewal fees.

Getting a professional site up and running these days is pretty easy. Pay about €50 - €100 for hosting, use wordpress.org (free) to build your website and to make the site look professional buy one of the 1000's of Wordpress themes (for about $50 - $75).

A couple of hundred euros and you are up and running. For a quick source of income, ad Google Adsense ads to your site.

And I think most people are getting weary of SEDO-type Parking - or GoDaddy Parked.

I have 20 odd domains parked with Godaddy and got a couple of dollars - as a test. Can get more setup as an affiliate - you can create your own Amazon site if you want to.

Problem is that it's about getting traffic. things dont magically happen on the web.

I'd agree, there's not a huge amount of money in it.

All I'd say is if you have a good generic domain name, that will get type in traffic and you are doing nothing with it, at least you might get some money in to help with the registration fees, until you develop it.

I have tried hosting Amazon shops on a few of my parked domains, and didn't see a great return from it.

Thanks for the advice there guys.

The domains I have aren't generic (although there are two very successful varients on .org & .co.uk) - not the reason I registered them, I had a different concept.

I'll probably end up sitting on them as I do want to do something with them, I just thought that I could maybe make enough to cover renewals

Have you thought about doing a joint venture with someone that has the time and skills to implement your idea. They develop the idea for share of the profits. Could be an option.
