Darren Sutherland is set to fight the man who took James DeGale the distance during the Briton's professional debut back in February.

Vepkhia Tchilaia will take on Sutherland at Fenton Manor Sports Complex on May 29, and the Dubliner knows that beating the Georgian will send a clear message out to the much heralded DeGale.

Sutherland managed to beat DeGale four times as an amateur but lost the pair's biggest bout to date - in the Olympic semi-finals last August.

The 27-year-old is pleased at landing a bout with Tchilaia, with his promoter Frank Maloney saying: "DeGale's camp claimed he was taken the distance by Tchilaia because of his awkwardness.

"There isn't much they can say if Darren walks right through him like he did his first two professional rivals.

"I just hope DeGale keeps winning because two years down the line we will have a big, big fight against Sutherland in an arena or football stadium.

"Darren's trainer, Brian Lawrence, believes he will be so far ahead of DeGale by then that the fight will not happen.

"Darren wanted a decent test, and if he can stop Tchilaia it really will give him a boost. This guy is a decent test and been preparing since last month."

Did a grand job. I would like to see him move up a bit now. He will look much better against a guy who is a bit more ambitious. Its very hard to do anything when the opponent has just come to cover up and try see out the distance.

Good performance from him, he looked powerful in the ring tonight and has obvious talent

I'm slightly worried by an apparent lack of speed from Darren(that's if your viewing him as a potential World Class fighter).
However everything else is looking good, it's so rare to see a prospect so controlled and calm in there, Darren has such a cool head on is shoulders, knows when to step up the pace and when to go back to his jab.

He really needs to be stepped up though, 3 fights in 7 months is **** for a prospect that needs to be moved pretty quick due to their age and previous am experience. The level of the opposition has been poor too. That guy was only chosen last night because he had fought Degale and the cocky Brit had failed to stop him. Maloney knew Darren wouldn't make the same mistake and thought he had a PR opportunity on his hands. He actually mentioned something about Darren and Degale fighting the same guys(before either turned pro), it seems this was a premeditated idea of Maloney's.

I just wish he'd pick opponents for their own value. Someone else on another forum mentioned Nathan King and Michael Monaghan as good next opponents for Darren, and I think if Darren was out again soon, either of those two fighter or Michael Gbenga(he fought Luis Garcia not too long ago) would be good opponents for Darren. But Maloney talked about getting 6 fights in a year for Darren, so he's going to have to step things up to give him is next 3 fights in 6 months(considering the opposition should get tougher).

There was talk about fighting Brian Magee for the irish title after 12/18 months, but at this rate Darren won't be fighting him for years. Which is a real shame as he does seem to be improving as a pro but when it comes to fight time he's not being tested. He'll grow complacent if the poor opposition continues. Maloney needs to get his **** in order.

Agreed. Its hard to tell about the speed due to the lack off opponents class. Think of how much Tyson Fury had done in the same amount of time as a pro, Sutherland should look to have his cv like Furys by the end of 09.

I know the ams are at times bad to make pro comparisons, but from their last
am meeting, Darren had little to offer.

Big, I agree, it is time now for a good step up. Darren isn't all that young; he started late in the pro's. It's a real hard weight with real tough and heavy hitters, guys that aren't even
close to world level will still be very hard to beat.

I'd love to see James and Darren in there within a year and for Darren to KO
James. Can he? Who knows. Darren's power still has to be proved at the PRO
game. Remember, the pros' is different and the TRUE KO hitter shows it
    against the pro tough men!

Has Darren really got the punch to do it. He couldn't KO James over 8 mins
in Beijing. Again, I know it's different, but James' strength and chin and maturity
will benefit him as a pro, and so too should Darren improve; because if
he doesn't, he won't beat James!

Seems to be a lot of hype brewing in the UK for Darren at the minute.

How long before they adopt him as their own

Don't know about that, the crowd seemed to be very quite throughout the fight despite his impressive performance and knockout power and could even be classed as a little hostile towards him, if he performs well enough though I wouldn't be surprised if that tosser from Boxrec was to change it

You have Degeale which is an obvious match up for the future all going well. Even if they are a weight apart.

2 other prospects are Jeffries (light heavy) and Garcia, the cuban based in Cork, he is 5-0. Do you think their paths will cross? Add to that the champs in or around that weight that could potentially be around then and you have a cracking few fights if they can be made.

On the Irish scene there is still Lee, Duddy and Macklin who in 2 years time may be in the mix if demand called for it.
