Going away on holidays to Lanzarote next month. Just wondering what's the limit on the amount of alcohol and cigarettes you can bring in before you have to declare it? Just can't remember the exact number, thought it was something like 200 cigs but not sure. Cheers

The maximum quantities that can be imported from non-EU countries without incurring duties and taxes are:

- for tobacco products
•200 cigarettes or
•100 cigarillos or
•50 cigars or
•250 grammes of tobacco;

- for alcoholic drinks (excluding beer)
•1 liter of spirits (e.g. whiskey, gin or vodka) or
•2 liters of intermediate products (e.g. sparkling or fortified wine, port, sherry),
•4 liters of still wine,
•16 litres of beer.

- for other goods
•goods to the maximum value of € 430 per adult and
•€ 215 per child under 15 years.

Lanzarote (Canary Islands) are a special zone and whilst part of Spain are
not seen as part of the EU, similar to the UK and Channel Islands.
Your duty free limit is the same as if travelling from outside the EU.

The Special Tax Regime (REF)

Although mainland tax regulations apply in the Canaries, companies operating there are also eligible for special tax incentives (the Special Tax Regime or REF). Key features of the REF are as follows:
• VAT is not applied in the Canary Islands; instead there is a specific Sales Tax (IGIC) which has a general rate of 5%. In addition to increased and reduced rates of IGIC, there is a zero tax rate for certain basic need products and services (eg telecommunications).
• Exemptions from duty on capital increases.
• The use of undistributed profits to reduce the taxable base provided that the amounts concerned are invested within three years in certain qualifying fixed assets or public stock.
• Enhanced tax credits for various types of investment.
