I was reading something a few weeks ago that mentioned EU ipod's have a cap on the volume, if this is true does anyone know a way to "uncap" the volume?

Yes, it is completely true. There is no way to uncap any of the new ipods, and most ipods released in the last 2 years can't be uncapped.

In fact, every mp3 player reseased in the EU will be capped, although the ipod classic/nano seem to be the most severely impacted by this cap. Also worth noting, you can easily remove the volume cap on other mp3 players through simple little tricks/settings, no idea why apple's ipod's are so tricky.

have you heard anything about this

doesn't work with the Nano 2nd gen or 3rd gen or itouch or iphone.
It can be done for itouch/iphone once you jailbreak but the nano's are proving impossible.
Next time I'm buying from the states.

So since I got my 4g nano in NY does that mean there is no cap?

I couldn't imagine the highest volume being any quieter though...

Or, just dump the rubbish headphones you get with an iPod and buy something decent for your ear drums. Most good pairs will allow you to have the volume at a reasonable level and still hear everything loud and clear.

should be ok, it's only EU one's that seem to be capped.

I have the older video 5g i think so i'm hoping i can uncap it.

that doesn't really help the situation.

what good is a cracking set of headphone's with no power to push them?

you would have to start getting into buying amp's and all sorts of audiophilia

i just wanted to able to hire them up a bit more...

but to add to the point i don't use the stock buds

Yup, I know it well, it does work with the older ipods, but nothing past the 5g ipod "classic"

EDIT: Not sure if gopod works on the "5.5g" actually..methinks not, but could be wrong.

Yup you can, not that you'll need to as the 5g wasn't that severely capped (unless apple altered that in a newer firmware update)

I don't really see to big problem with this, how often do you actually stick the volume up full. Also don't forget this is being brought in to help people stop damaging their hearing by listening to devices at to high a volume. A second bonus effect is to reduce those annoting people who want everyone else t hear what they are listening too.

With regards to different earphones, one of the major advantages of upgrading earphones are the amount of noise isolation or cancelling phones there are availible nowdays, for fairly cheap. These really do make a difference by letting you listen to music at lower levels without being disturbed.

Also some earphones will actually have a louder output for the same input, without need for amplifiers.

Well I think it's up to me and no one else at what I want to put into my ears no?

I don't think it's capped to help other people who didn't spend 300e on an ipod enjoy their journey home on the bus because the little emo's Norwegian industrial metal won't be heard on the back of the 77a bus apart from the fact it's drowned out by that nonse with his banging techno piouring out of his mobile phone right? :D

I shouldn't have to fork out for a set of headphone's because the EU think i should listen to MY music at a certain level..

I listen to a lot of podcasts and on mine I used to have to have them up all the way while walking through the city.

I got a pair of earphones that go into your ear
    (something like these http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser/home_en.nsf/root/private_headphones_classic-line_cxseries-earphones-CX-500?Open&path=private_headphones_classic-line_cxseries).

Turning it all the way up is too loud now.

Advanced buyers tip. In the shop I was buying them there were two of exactly the same model except one was white and €10 more expensive, they sound the same no matter what colour they are :D

Your very right on this, and in fact the better option would have been for the EU to educate people better on the dangers of loud noises, rather than imposeing a restriction

Very true this is just a pet gripe of mine

No that is your choice, but seriously I reckon its worth it even just spend 20 quid on a set of cheap canal phones. They block out a fair bit of sound and make your music appear louder. I personally find them great and actually more comfy.

Bullcrap, using that guise we might as well give them free reign to impose ANY ridiculous law.

This is such a silly uninformed law. The volume and ability to damage ears depends completely on the type of headphone.
If you're serious about volume get a portable headphone amp.
