Bike got a knock; gears slipping now

    Hi,

I have a Trek 7.2 FX (all original parts) which has given me no trouble until this morning on the way to work, when the chain kept slipping out of gear on the back cogs when I put any weight on them.

I showed it briefly to a helpful guy in MacDonald Cycles in Rathgar who pointed out that the bit that connects the rear gear assembly to the frame has bent inwards, so it must've fallen without my noticing. Can't remember what he called it tho - it is a dropout?

In general would you guys recommend replacing it, or attempting a home-fix by pulling it back out with a pliers? I'm *hoping* I won't need to replace the full gear assembly (Shimano Alivio)...

    Thanks

Rear derailleur hanger is bent, as the guy in the shop has noticed. It's a small part that connects the rear derailleur to the frame. A new one should cost less than €10. Best to replace it rather than try and bend it back.

Yep, as el tonto says, the 7.2 FX has a replaceable derailleur hanger. You risk damaging the frame if you try and bend it back, and you may not get it 100%. A new one is cheap and you know it'll be dead straight.

Should be able to get one for around 15-20 online. Go to chainreactioncycles.com, search for hanger and look for your bike model

But browsing around now, it seems Trek hangers are twice as expensive.

Just get it replaced whatever the cost. A pro team mechanic told me last week that bent mech hangars were the number one cause of gears not working properly. He was saying this as he was straightening one for me in a vice (this was on the RAS), even though he got it straight enough to get the bike running the next day he still recommended replacing it (and buying a couple of spares in the meantime - fellas turn up at races with 7000 euro bikes and spares galore, but if one tiny 10 - 20 euro part breaks the whole thing is worthless and very few people think to have one or two spares)
