The Sopranos ***Series Finale***

I started watching The Sopranos about 3 months after it ended in 2007 and have been trying to make the series last as long as possible, because it is easily the best tv show ever made.

Anyway, just finished the finale and think it was the most satisfying finale of any tv show, that I've ever seen. Everything about it was fantastic, and Phil Leotardo's death was possibly the most gruesome of the entire series.
I'm glad AJ overcame his depression, as I really didn't want them to end the show with him still suicidal. I felt really bad for Junior not being able to recognise Janice or Tony, but thought his storyline ended well.

One question about Paulie though - was he demoted earlier on in the show, because in the first couple of seasons he seemed to be really high up in the family, but in the last few seasons he was clearly a good bit down the totem poll. But then again it seemed in the last episode that he was second in command, with Silvio and Bobby out of the picture. Can anyone clear this up?

Does anyone know are any of the cast doing any shows on tv at the moment or in any recent movies, etc.?

James Gandofini is in a new movie "In the loop" directed by Armando Iannucci, creator of the BBC seris "In the thick of it".

As for Paulie, I think it was more a case of Silvio getting promoted above him, than him being demoted. And the fact that, Toni suspected him of being the one that told Johnny SacK about ralph's fat joke about his wife.

Sil was the consiglerie of the Soprano crew. Paulie got frozen out of the top of the Soprano crew when Tony tried to move day to day control into the hands of Silvio and Christopher.

That is genius. The Sopranos lives on.
He's got more of them too, if you look in the related videos. Part 2 has Chris in it.

Gandolfini is also in the upcoming remake of The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 and the adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are.

Paulie flirted with New York, Tony was suspicious and hence Paulie was sidelined... It all began when Paulie was incarcerated and told Johnny Sack about the jock Ralphie made about his wife (Jennie) having a 90 pound mole removed from her ass...

I agree, the final episode was incredible.

i meant to post on friday but i forgot. :(

i read a great review of the finale that went into all the details of every scene and how NOTHING in the final episode was random or just there for the sake of it.

everything from the colour pallette of the restaurant in the last scene to what they were eating, the decor and other surroundings and the people in the place were all there doing what they were doing for a reason.

i'm trying to track it down now, but it was very interesting reading and after you've read it, if you watch the finale again (and consider the fact that david chase spent 21 months thinking up the finale) you will be in no doubt whatsoever as to the conclusion. :)

and you'll also see that david chase is a total genius! :D

he's quite humble about his opinions and makes no claims to be an expert and even points out some of his own mistakes occasionally, but overall it made a lot of sense to me and didn't leave too much room for misinterpretation (imho) of what the finale was all about.

im pretty much as thick as the proverbial plank but my conclusion was that our anti hero went upstairs at the end to meet sonny corleone and co

there is such a huge amount in the finale that points in one particular direction that once you know what to look for it's blindingly obvious.

i won't spoil it in case anyone else hasn't seen it, but if you really want to know read the bob harris article and then watch it again and i don't think you'll have any doubts. :)

Twas a bit of a read but good. I never really cared too much about the meaning behind the ending, I just though it was excellent and my main assumption was the most populous but the explanations in the post got into such intricate details...very cool!

I agree it was a great ending and a good explanation. But there is still enough ambiguity to allow the much muted Sopranos the movie to be made. Does anyone know if Chase has catergorically ruled out making it?

I think the fact that there was trouble getting the actors back to film the last few episodes suggests that there will be no movie, I personally dont want one.

I also believe that the black screen at the end of the last episode answers your query categorically.

Just wishful thinking on my part.

I was thinking it could be awesome to have a kind of pre Sopranos series. Johnny Soprano, Junior, Dickie Moltisanti, all the good old boys. The problem is it would be far too easy to make a disaster of it. Also, I can't see David Chase wanting anything to do with it. There's definitely the possibility for a good story though.

David Chase has on a number of occasions said that there will not be a Sopranos movie nor has there been any truth in any article or link suggesting there may be one.

I did read an interview with Chase where he was askd about the possibility of a Sopranos spin-off after denying any possibility of a movie and iirc he did refer to a Johnny boy seres being the only spin off he could see working but that he had no intention of making it yet didnt expct that to stop it being rumoured just as with the movie. I think it was in this inerview that he also joked about a Paulie spinoff :D.

id link the article but afaik the interview i read was sent to my flatmate as a number of pages ripped from a magazine a few years ago by his dad knwing he was a Sopranos fan and im not even sure what magazine it was let alone if it couldbe found online. However i do believe Chas has dismissed the movie rumours svera time so info on that should be findable.

just watched the finale for the first time.
    im not happy tbh
i resent the fact that i have to go scrolling internet forums to "get" the ending. (maybe you'll say im just an idiot for not getting it etc)
but jesus after so many hours and a finale leaves you totally underwhelmed i dont think thats good enough!
i dont mind thinks being left open/unambiguous but the end was more like a dream sequence from previous episodes.
The last scene certainly didnt build up to much atmosphere/tension for me either unlike much of the other episodes.

i think there is a certain amount of fan boys just reading into it what they want and then convincing themselves that it was a great ending!

    anyone else feel the same.

I didn't like the ending at the time but it grew a bit after a while, though I still think it could've/should've been better.

I think most people had similar feelings after watching it, but you shouldn't have had to scroll internet forums to "get" the ending. The ending was ambigious for that very reason - for the viewer to decide for himself what happened. There are numerous theories - and i presume i can say this with out spoilers since *series finale* is clearly written in the title - that Tony died in that scene but there are just as many to say that he is still living.

    This ^^

Although I did read up on the analysis of others after it ended I didnt feel compelled to try to find closure.

For me, The Sopranos is the greatest show ever to be made. I have yet to watch something that draws me into the lives of fictional characters so much. The ending left it to me to decide what I think happened based on all the events leading up to the black screen (events being season 1-6 :p ).

TV viewers are these days polluted with the run of the mill, standard format series where there must be closure because the truth is the majority of the viewers are sheep who'll watch just about any oul crap. LOST being the ultimate of examples, what sort of crap was that??

What I'd say is dont get hung up on the ending, just enjoy it!!! What enraged me about the ending was that IT ENDED! It has left a void in my life that even The Wire could not fill.

reading this thread last week led me to rewatch the entire series, absolutely ****ing fantastic. I wasn't as impressed with season 6 as i was with the rest though, and the last episode especially just didn't do it for me. Few good moments, I'm not sure why we had to be shown that meadow can't park a car but it was still amusing.

Because she got it on her third try.

Her first two attempts were failures, just like the first two attempts in the series to shoot Tony.
I thought the ending was instantly obvious because I often die in my dreams and that's exactly what happens. It just cuts to nothing but black and there is a deafening silence. Everything is gone.

Bump - Just watched the whole sopranos start to finish, started a few weeks ago finished last night. Now I had seen the last scene before but wanted the whole story prior to this. I am not sure I agree with bob harris. If he was whacked who whacked him and why? Yes there are hints etc throughout. Whopper ending all the same.

do you have a link to the bob harris article please? link posted earlier in the thread is coming up as "not found" - I would love to read it. HUGE Sopranos fan. thanks!

It's a very good series to become engrossed in, but I disagree that it's the best series ending. This honour in my opinion goes to Six Feet Under. :)

Lads I was just wondering why The Sopranos doesn't have its own forum?
