Heart says 06 Mazda6, head says 07 Mondeo

Buying a car in next few days. Which do you think is best?
    07 Mondeo or 06 Mazda6?

Heart says Mazda 6, always loved them, but head says Mondeo as its an 07 for the same money.

Both round about the same price, both the previous versions, both 1.8 petrol and both great drivers cars which is important.

    Your views much appreciated, thanks!

    Mondeo

Mazda. I've never yet experienced a Ford engine that impressed me, and Mondeo's are everywhere. Also I can't get comfortable in a Mondeo, driver position far too high.

Mondos are a fantastic car, they are every where because they are very good.

got a 01 zetec and after a nct pass drives like new.

the drivers seat is electronic adjustable from boy racer position to head visor position.

I find it a very comy drive, certainly as good as a few bmw's i had.

I had an 02 LX mondeo 90bhp TDDI - bomb proof - 100,000 miles and not even a puncture !

04 Zetec 115bhp 2.0 TDCi - lovely car but injectors were a lot of trouble and cost heaps to repair - 70,000 miles, I think, but a lovely drive

current car 07 Zetec 125bhp 1.8TDCi - a good return to bomb proof label - 75,000kms without a single fault, not even a puncture. A lot heavier than older one and would be really nice with the 2.0 TDCi.

Never drove a 6 for extended time so cannot comment on that.

My vote is for the Mondeo

Both are good cars so it's a no risk decision - if you prefer the mazda yourself then go for it. Personally I'd prefer the mondeo, but the mazda is nice looking and reliable with a fine big boot.

I'd get the Mazda if I were you.The mundane-o is a good car and all that but they're really, really dull. I don't understand why anyone aside from cops and sales reps drive them actually and this is reflected in their residual values. Whatever way you look at it the Mazda is far more desirable as they are better built and more reliable as well as being far less common. I'd only buy a mondeo if it was cheap, which in fairness most of them are hence your dilemma I suppose.

They are everywhere cause they were fleet cars. The Mazda is every bit as good in all the areas that count, and even better in some. The Mondeo has a very slight edge in steering feel, but it's miniscule enough as the Mazda steering is also excellent in this segment.

Obviously you haven't opened a Mazda bonnet lately :) Ford all the way.

Mondeo gets the vote in my book, same reliability, better chassis, spares half the price, same depreciation.

How do you mean? Mazda petrol engines have always been good. Same can't be said for Ford, who's best petrol engines were made by someone else like Yamaha or Volvo. And the Mondeo and Mazda chassis are extremely similar, so to say the Ford has a better chassis shows that you're not familiar with the Mazda. Less likely to need Mazda spares, so guess that negates that! :D

Despite the general belief the 6 and Mondeo do not share engines.

OP this is a tough one to call, both are very good cars so really depends on what you value most in a car.

I don't get why heart AND head shouldn't say Mazda6. It's not like you're saying Alfa 156 vs. Moneo...The Mazda is much better looking IMO, not as common and has similar dynamics (handling etc.) I had a 6 for a few years and it was bullet-proof reliability-wise.

I think there is a bias in favour of the Mondeo because all the British car mags talk up the Ford and pretty much ignore Jap cars that aren't a Skyline or Evo/Impreza.

I don't think the 1.8 (not same engine!) in either car is anything to write home about by modern standards in terms of refinement or power but I can vouch for the 1.8 Mazda being very, very durable.

I agree with this. Sick of the UK car mags blowing it up Ford and BMW's ass. Everything that's as good always comes out with "runs the Ford very close", same with BMW. New C-Class case in point. By all reports handles every bit as good as the 3-series, has even better steering, looks more upmarket both inside and out, yet conclusion is "runs the 3-series very close indeed". Horsecrap. Merc finally built a better car, get over it and deliver the verdict.

I agree too. Haven't ever had a Mondeo and have only had a Mazda 6 for a few months but I love it. I never seriously considered a Mondeo mainly because the Mazda looks so good and I read in loads of places and heard from loads of people about the reliablity of the Mazda and that was it, only car for me. It certainly looks sportier than a Mondeo, if you're interested in that.

I had a Mazda6 for 15 months or so. I'd go for the Mondeo in your situation.

Was looking for a second hand car a couple of months ago. Drove many different cars and ended up going for a mazda 6. Didn't like the mondeo at all.

The new shape mondeo is a great car. The 2.0 TDCI is the one to get.

I would doubt the OP is looking at a new shape 07 Mondeo if it is costing the same as a 06 Mazda 6.

Possible car mag propoganda again? I know a guy who switched to a Mondeo after years of Toyota ownership (Carinas, Avensis) and has had nothing but trouble (don't know details TBH, cars aren't a major topic of conversation odd time we meet. I just know he is severly pissed off and regrets going to the Ford).

Against that again, the 2.0D engine in the 6 gave problems (even a Mazda mechanic admitted that tgo me). Dunno if they've solved that in the latest model or indeed in the 2.2D.

Nice one. Hope you got a good price. Saw an 08 in Duffys in Newbridge for 17950. It was a 1.8 petrol executive GH according to cartell.
