I'm trying to play around a bit more with my pics. I like this one but I would like to leave the runner in colour and turn the back ground black and white. Is this difficult. Eould appreciate a step by step. Thanks in advance.

There're a few ways to do it.

1: Select the sponge, set to desaturate and brush over everything you want to remove colour from.

2:Select the runner with the lasso or magnetic selection tool (Or any other of your choice). The click select-Inverse. Then Image-adjustments-desaturate.

There are a number of other ways you could do it but those two would be the easiest I think.

Very quick go at it, not perfect but you get the idea

Ghostintheruins was quicker on the draw than I was.

I used the magnetic lasso around the runner, then selected inverse removed saturation then put a bit of Gaussian blur to smudge the background.

Thanks so much, it looks excellent, I have one last question, on the same picture. Iwould love to have his left leg out of the frame/border as if he's running out of the picture. Any ideas and again thanks so much.

Having found the other you tube video very helpful, I did a search and got this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udCJi2xRWvU this is what I want to know how to do but he's going too fast and appears to skip parts, anyone recommend another video or even a written account somewhere. Thanks

    Or,

Create a duplicate layer - desaturate - select eraser - rub colour back on jogger - flatten layer - +10 Saturation - +10 Contrast.

That's actually really easy, the video messes around with masks (which I've never really understood and usually find quite messy).

Is this what you're looking for? (I just did it really quickly and badly to demonstrate)

In which case you need to do the following:

1 - Create an image slightly larger than the original with a white background, then paste in the original.
2 - Erase the lower part of the original except the foot/leg that you want sticking out.
3 - To get the sharp line use the rectangle selection tool to select the size you want to keep and then use the eraser within that, it won't erase beyond that line.
